Chapter 15: The Woman Who Saved Her

I stared at the photo.

Maria.

Standing behind Emily’s hospital bed.

For one terrible moment, I felt the same fear I had felt at the funeral.

The fear that I had trusted the wrong person.

Detective Collins took the phone.

“When was this taken?””

I looked at the details.

Five minutes ago.

Impossible.

Maria had been with us.

She couldn’t be there.

Unless…

I looked at Nathan.

“Someone is setting her up.””

He nodded.

“Finally.””

Everyone looked at him.

Nathan stared at the photo.

“Victoria has done this before.””

“What do you mean?””

“She creates enemies.””

He looked at Michael.

“She makes everyone blame each other while she disappears.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

“I owe you the truth.””

I didn’t say anything.

“Maria didn’t help Victoria.””

He swallowed.

“She helped Emily survive.””

I froze.

“What?””

Michael looked at me.

“The night Emily collapsed, Maria found her.””

My breathing stopped.

“What are you saying?””

“She was still alive.””

The room went silent.

Michael continued.

“Maria found Emily before the ambulance came.””

“Then why wasn’t she taken to the hospital?””

Michael looked at Victoria.

“Because Victoria arrived first.””

Everything clicked.

The funeral.

The coffin.

Maria’s desperation.

She wasn’t crazy.

She was fighting against time.

I looked at Nathan.

“Where is Victoria?””

But she was gone.

The warehouse door was open.

She had disappeared during the chaos.

Detective Collins immediately called for backup.

We rushed back to the hospital.

When we arrived, Emily was awake.

And Maria was sitting beside her.

The moment she saw me, she started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

I walked toward her.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You saved her.””

Maria covered her face.

“I tried.””

Emily reached for my hand.

“Daniel.””

I sat beside her.

“What happened?””

She looked at Maria.

“She came because she knew Victoria was coming.””

Maria nodded.

“I saw her leave the warehouse.””

Detective Collins turned.

“You saw Victoria?””

Maria looked down.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell us?””

“Because she threatened Emily.””

My heart tightened.

“With what?””

Maria looked at Emily.

“She said if I talked, she would reveal the secret Emily was protecting.””

Emily became quiet.

I looked at her.

“What secret?””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

Then she reached under her pillow.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I was waiting until you were ready.””

Inside was a letter.

Claire’s handwriting.

My hands shook.

The final piece.

I read the first line.

Daniel,

If you found this, it means the truth finally came out.

But there is one thing you need to know.

I kept reading.

Claire had discovered everything.

The money.

The lies.

The hidden family.

But the last paragraph destroyed me.

Because it wasn’t about Michael.

It wasn’t about Nathan.

It was about me.

Claire wrote:

The reason they are fighting over your inheritance is because your father left something bigger than money.

A hidden company trust.

A trust controlled by one person.

The person he trusted most.

I looked at Emily.

Then Maria.

Then the letter.

The final line was written in bold.

The person who controls everything is not Michael.

Not Nathan.

Not Victoria.

It is you, Daniel.

A knock came from the hospital door.

Everyone turned.

A police officer stood there.

“Detective Collins?””

“Yes?””

He looked at me.

“We found Victoria Hale.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

The officer hesitated.

“She turned herself in.””

Nobody spoke.

Then he added:

“But before surrendering, she left one final message.””

“What message?””

The officer looked at me.

“She said the person who really ordered Claire’s death is still free.””

The room went silent.

Then he handed me a photograph.

A photograph taken that morning.

Of a man standing outside the hospital.

Watching Emily.

Watching me.

And I recognized him immediately.

May you like

My father.

Alive.
