Chapter 8: The Woman Behind Michael
The key opened a safety deposit box at a private bank in downtown Boston.
I barely spoke during the drive.
My mind was trapped between two realities.
The brother I grew up with.
And the person who might have destroyed everyone I loved.
Maria sat in the back seat.
She looked exhausted.
“Daniel.””
I looked in the mirror.
“Yes?””
“I need you to prepare yourself.””
“For what?””
“For the possibility that you never knew your family.””
Those words stayed with me.
At the bank, Detective Collins met us.
She had already received a warrant.
Inside the box was a small collection of items.
A flash drive.
A notebook.
Several documents.
And a letter.
The letter had Claire’s handwriting.
My hands shook when I opened it.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, something happened to me.
I hope I am wrong.
I hope Michael is not who I think he is.
But if I’m right, do not trust anyone who says they are protecting you.
I stopped reading.
My vision blurred.
Detective Collins gently took the letter.
“Keep going.””
I forced myself.
Claire wrote about Michael’s financial crimes.
Hidden accounts.
Fake contracts.
Missing money.
But then came the part that made my blood run cold.
She mentioned another person.
A woman.
Someone who helped Michael move money.
Someone who convinced people to stay silent.
The name was written clearly.
Victoria Hale.
I looked at Sarah.
“Who is she?””
Detective Collins checked her notes.
“Victoria Hale.””
She paused.
“Your mother’s closest friend.””
My stomach turned.
“My mother?””
Sarah nodded.
“According to records, she handled some of your family’s finances after your father died.””
I looked at the documents.
The pieces started connecting.
Victoria had access.
Michael had access.
Together, they could control everything.
Then Maria spoke.
“She came to the house after Claire died.””
I looked at her.
“You never told me.””
Maria looked ashamed.
“She threatened me.””
“What did she say?””
Maria swallowed.
“She said if I ever mentioned Claire’s name again, I would lose everything.””
I closed my eyes.
Eight years.
Eight years of believing my wife’s death was just tragedy.
But someone had been protecting a lie.
Detective Collins plugged in the flash drive.
A video file appeared.
Recorded two days before Claire died.
We watched.
Claire was sitting in our old office.
She looked scared.
Then the camera angle shifted.
Michael entered.
My hands clenched.
Claire stood.
“You’re stealing from Daniel.””
Michael smiled.
“You don’t understand business.””
“I understand fraud.””
His expression changed.
Then another voice appeared.
A woman.
Victoria.
She stepped into the room.
“You should have stayed quiet, Claire.””
I froze.
Claire looked terrified.
“Victoria?””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Detective Collins immediately saved the file.
“This changes everything.””
I stared at the screen.
“Claire knew.””
“Yes,” Sarah said.
“And Michael killed her?””
Sarah looked at me.
“We need evidence before we say that.””
I understood.
But my heart already knew something was wrong.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Nobody spoke.
Only breathing.
“Who is this?””
A woman’s voice finally whispered.
“Daniel.””
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
“Victoria?””
A soft laugh came through the phone.
“You found Claire’s little secret.””
My blood turned cold.
“How do you know?””
“Because I wanted you to find it.””
I looked at Detective Collins.
“Why?””
Victoria’s voice became colder.
“Because you still don’t understand what happened.””
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then she said:
May you like
“Claire wasn’t the first woman Michael tried to bury.””
The call ended.
