Chapter 1: The Sound Beneath the Coffin

The last thing I expected to hear at my wife’s funeral was her voice calling my name from inside her coffin.

For three days, I had forced myself to accept that Emily was gone.

The doctors said her heart stopped. The hospital records confirmed it. The funeral home prepared her body, and hundreds of white lilies surrounded the glossy white coffin sitting in the center of the chapel.

Everything looked painfully final.

Until Maria, our housekeeper, ran through the chapel doors carrying a crowbar.

“Maria!”” I shouted.

Every head turned.

My brother Michael stood beside me, frozen in shock. My wife’s parents gasped from the front row. Guests whispered as Maria pushed through the aisle, tears streaming down her face.

“Stop her!”” someone yelled.

But Maria didn’t slow down.

She reached the coffin and lifted the crowbar above her head.

“Maria, what are you doing?”” I grabbed her shoulder.

She looked at me with terrified eyes.

“She’s alive.””

My heart stopped.

“What did you say?””

“She’s alive, Daniel.””

I stared at her.

“Emily died three days ago.””

Maria shook her head violently.

“No. She tried to tell me.””

The chapel became silent.

Michael stepped forward.

“Daniel, get her away from the coffin. She’s clearly not thinking straight.””

Maria ignored him.

“She moved.””

My hands tightened into fists.

“You’re talking about my wife’s funeral. Do you understand what you’re saying?””

“Yes,” she whispered.

“And I know how it sounds. But ten minutes ago, before everyone arrived, I heard something.””

Her fingers gripped the crowbar.

“I heard Emily knocking.””

A few relatives exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Someone whispered, “This is insane.””

Michael walked closer.

“Daniel, this woman is making a scene.””

Maria suddenly swung.

CRACK.

The sound exploded through the chapel.

People screamed.

The coffin lid splintered near the top corner.

I grabbed the crowbar from her hands.

“What the hell are you doing?””

Maria collapsed against the coffin, crying.

“I’m trying to save her.””

The funeral director rushed over.

“Everyone needs to step back.””

But Maria slapped her hand against the broken wood.

“Emily!””

Everyone stared.

“If you can hear me, do it again!””

Nothing happened.

The silence felt worse than the screaming.

Michael let out a bitter laugh.

“Daniel, this is embarrassing.””

I wanted to believe him.

I wanted to believe Maria had lost control.

Because the alternative was impossible.

Then I heard it.

Tap.

My breath disappeared.

Nobody moved.

Tap.

Tap.

The sound came from inside the coffin.

A woman in the front row covered her mouth.

Someone screamed.

My knees nearly gave out.

Maria looked at me.

“I told you.””

I slowly walked forward.

“Emily?””

The funeral director grabbed my arm.

“Sir, please don’t.””

I turned toward him.

“Why?””

His expression changed.

For the first time, I saw fear.

Not sadness.

Fear.

Maria stepped between us.

“What are you hiding?””

The funeral director said nothing.

I pulled away from him and leaned toward the broken section of the coffin.

The darkness inside stared back at me.

Then something moved.

A pale hand pushed through the damaged wood.

The entire chapel erupted.

Emily’s fingers trembled weakly.

“Open it!”” Maria screamed.

The funeral director suddenly grabbed the lid.

“No!””

I looked at him.

“No?””

His face turned completely white.

“You don’t understand.””

A weak voice came from inside.

“Daniel…”

My entire body froze.

That was Emily’s voice.

The voice I heard every morning.

The voice that said goodbye before leaving for work.

The voice I thought I would never hear again.

Then she whispered three words.

“He did this.””

The funeral director stepped backward.

Michael’s face changed.

May you like

And I realized something terrifying.

Someone in that room already knew Emily wasn’t supposed to wake up.
