Chapter 11: The Lie That Saved a Life

Nobody spoke after reading the note.

The room was silent except for the machines beside Emily’s bed.

I looked at the handwriting.

It looked like Michael’s.

But after everything, I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

“Michael came here?””

Emily nodded.

“He stood right there.””

She pointed toward the door.

“What did he say?””

Emily looked at me.

“He said I misunderstood everything.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course he did.””

“He said he never wanted me dead.””

I looked at the note again.

“Then why were you buried alive?””

Emily closed her eyes.

“Because he was trying to hide me.””

That answer made no sense.

“From who?””

She looked at Detective Collins.

“Nathan.””

Sarah immediately stepped closer.

“Tell us everything.””

Emily took a deep breath.

“After Claire died, Michael changed.””

I felt a pain in my chest.

“He became obsessed with protecting the family name.””

“Protecting?””

Emily nodded.

“He told me Nathan was dangerous.””

I stared.

“So Michael knew about him.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Years before I met you.””

I walked toward the window.

My entire life felt like a puzzle where someone had removed all the important pieces.

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

Emily looked down.

“Because your father made him promise.””

I turned.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“Your father knew about Nathan.””

The room went silent.

“Everyone knew except me?””

Emily looked guilty.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“No. Keep going.””

She continued.

“Michael said Nathan believed you stole his inheritance.””

“I didn’t even know he existed.””

“I know.””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“But Nathan didn’t care.””

Detective Collins crossed her arms.

“Then why fake Emily’s death?””

Emily looked at her.

“Because Nathan was going to kill me.””

Nobody moved.

I stared.

“You’re saying Michael saved you?””

Emily nodded slowly.

“I think so.””

The possibility felt impossible.

The man who poisoned her.

The man who changed the insurance documents.

The man who lied.

Was he actually trying to stop something worse?

Then Sarah received a phone notification.

Her face changed.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“We found Nathan.””

My heart jumped.

“Where?””

She hesitated.

“At your house.””

I felt ice spread through my body.

“What?””

“He’s been living there.””

The words didn’t make sense.

“My house?””

Sarah nodded.

“We found fingerprints matching Nathan in multiple rooms.””

I looked at Emily.

Her face was pale.

“He was watching us.””

The drive home felt endless.

Police surrounded the property.

Every memory inside that house suddenly felt different.

The hallway where Emily and I laughed.

The kitchen where we ate dinner.

The office where Claire’s documents disappeared.

Someone had been hiding among us.

Detective Collins led us inside.

The basement door was open.

I stopped.

“I don’t have a basement.””

Sarah looked at me.

“You do.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

She pointed.

“This was hidden behind the storage wall.””

A section of drywall had been removed.

Behind it was a staircase.

I had lived in this house for years.

And I never knew.

We walked down.

At the bottom was a room.

Not a storage room.

A living space.

A bed.

Clothes.

Photos.

Hundreds of photos.

Of me.

Of Emily.

Of Claire.

My stomach turned.

Nathan had been watching us.

Studying us.

Detective Collins picked up a folder.

“Daniel.””

I looked.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

Financial records.

And one final page.

A birth certificate.

I read the name.

Nathan Carter.

Then I saw the date.

The same birthday as Michael.

Sarah looked at me.

“They really were twins.””

Then a noise came from upstairs.

A door slammed.

Everyone froze.

Detective Collins reached for her weapon.

Someone was inside the house.

A man’s voice echoed down the stairs.

“Daniel.””

May you like

My blood turned cold.

Because the voice sounded exactly like Michael.
