Chapter 7: The Person Behind the Camera
The person on the screen stood inside my office like they belonged there.
They didn’t rush.
They didn’t panic.
They moved with the confidence of someone who knew exactly what they were searching for.
I watched as they opened my desk drawer.
Then the hidden compartment.
The compartment only three people knew existed.
Me.
My father.
And the person who had helped me organize my father’s estate documents.
My attorney.
I looked at the screen again.
The camera angle wasn’t perfect.
The person’s face was partially covered.
But I recognized the jacket.
The watch.
The way they moved.
My stomach tightened.
“No.””
Sarah looked at me.
“What?””
I turned the laptop toward everyone.
Nobody spoke.
Michael stepped closer.
His face changed immediately.
“You know them?””
I didn’t answer.
Because admitting it felt impossible.
The person in the video was my father’s longtime attorney, Daniel Brooks.
The same man who had emailed me minutes earlier.
The same man who had handled my father’s will.
The same man who had told me for ten years that there was nothing else left.
Ryan stared at the screen.
“That’s not possible.””
“Why?”” I asked.
Ryan looked uncomfortable.
“Because Daniel was the one who contacted me.””
The room went silent.
I looked at him.
“What?””
Ryan swallowed.
“He hired my company.””
My eyes moved from Ryan to the screen.
“So you were working for him?””
“Yes.””
“And you never thought that was important information?””
Ryan looked down.
“I didn’t know what he was planning.””
Michael shook his head.
“We’ve all been played.””
Sarah suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at her.
It wasn’t a happy laugh.
It was bitter.
“You’re all acting shocked like I’m the only person who betrayed him.””
I looked at her.
“Sarah, don’t.””
“No.””
She pointed toward Michael.
“Your brother hid an inheritance.””
Then toward Ryan.
“This man lied about who he was.””
Then she pointed at the laptop.
“And that attorney stole from your family.””
Her voice cracked.
“So why am I the villain?””
Nobody answered.
Because for the first time, she wasn’t completely wrong.
Everyone in that room had secrets.
But there was one difference.
Some people’s secrets hurt others.
Some people’s secrets were built to take something.
I closed the laptop.
“I’m going to Daniel’s office.””
Michael stepped forward.
“James, wait.””
“No.””
I grabbed my keys.
“I’m done waiting.””
Sarah moved in front of the door.
“You’re just going to walk away?””
I looked at her.
“You already walked away from me.””
Her face changed.
For a moment, I saw the woman I married.
The woman who used to laugh with me in the kitchen.
The woman who held my hand when my father died.
Then it disappeared.
“I never wanted this to happen.””
“Then why did you do it?””
She looked away.
Because she knew there was no answer that could fix what happened.
I walked outside.
But before I reached my car, Ryan followed me.
“James.””
I turned.
“What?””
He held out a small flash drive.
“I found this inside the safe.””
I didn’t take it immediately.
“What is it?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why give it to me?””
“Because Daniel specifically told Sarah to destroy it.””
My heart stopped.
“How do you know?””
Ryan looked at me.
“Because I heard them talking.””
I took the flash drive.
“What else did you hear?””
Ryan hesitated.
Then said:
“He wasn’t trying to steal your inheritance.””
I frowned.
“Then what was he trying to do?””
Ryan looked toward the house.
“He was trying to erase proof that your father knew what would happen.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Ryan’s face became serious.
“It means your father didn’t just leave you ownership.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What else did he leave?””
May you like
Ryan looked at the flash drive in my hand.
“Evidence.””
