Chapter 11: The Signature That Changed Everything

I zoomed in on the document.

At first, I couldn’t see the signature clearly.

The image was blurry.

But the handwriting looked familiar.

Too familiar.

I sent Ryan a message.

*Who signed it?*

The reply came almost instantly.

*Your brother.*

I looked up.

Michael was standing across the room.

My brother.

The person who claimed he had been protecting me.

The person who said he had hidden the truth for my own good.

“You signed it.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The anger I felt was different from before.

With Sarah, it was heartbreak.

With Daniel, it was betrayal.

With Michael, it was something deeper.

Because he was my family.

“Why?””

Michael sat down.

“Because Dad asked me to.””

“That’s your excuse?””

“It’s the truth.””

I threw the paper onto the desk.

“You signed a document that controlled my future.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I signed a document that protected your future.””

“By lying to me?””

“By waiting.””

I laughed.

“Waiting for what?””

Michael looked at Sarah.

Then back at me.

“For the person who wanted your inheritance to reveal themselves.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Michael nodded.

“Dad knew someone would eventually try to take control.””

“And you knew this entire time?””

“Yes.””

“Ten years.””

“Yes.””

I walked away.

I needed space.

I needed air.

Because every person I trusted had become another piece of a puzzle I never wanted.

Then Sarah spoke.

“James.””

I stopped.

“I need to tell you something.””

I didn’t turn around.

“What now?””

Her voice was quiet.

“When I contacted Daniel, I didn’t know his real plan.””

I faced her.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then why did you keep meeting him?””

She looked down.

“Because he promised me something.””

“What?””

“That you would never find out.””

The honesty shocked me.

At least it was honest.

“Why would you want that?””

She wiped her eyes.

“Because I was scared.””

“Of losing me?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Of losing everything.””

The answer hurt.

But it explained everything.

Before I could respond, the front door opened downstairs.

Everyone froze.

A voice called out.

“James?””

I recognized it immediately.

Daniel.

My body went still.

Sarah whispered:

“He followed you.””

Michael moved toward the door.

“Stay here.””

But I was done hiding.

I walked downstairs.

Daniel stood in the entryway.

Perfect suit.

Calm expression.

Like he belonged there.

“You shouldn’t have come here.””

I stared at him.

“You shouldn’t have broken into my office.””

His smile disappeared.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You were trying to protect yourself.””

Daniel sighed.

“You have no idea what your father left behind.””

“Then tell me.””

He looked at Michael.

Then Sarah.

Then me.

“You think this is about money.””

I said nothing.

“It’s not.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“It’s about power.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What power?””

He looked at the staircase.

Then at the walls of my house.

“This entire family was built on a secret.””

“What secret?””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“The reason your father gave you everything.””

I waited.

Then he said:

“Because you’re not his only heir.””

The room went silent.

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Daniel reached into his briefcase.

May you like

And pulled out a birth certificate.

With a name I had never seen before.
