Chapter 10: The Truth My Brother Buried
I drove home faster than I should have.
Not because I trusted Michael.
Not because I believed Sarah.
But because after everything I had learned, I knew one thing.
The truth was still inside that house.
The same house where my wife opened my safe.
The same house where my brother revealed secrets he had hidden for ten years.
The same house where everyone seemed to know my life better than I did.
When I pulled into the driveway, I noticed something immediately.
Ryan’s truck was gone.
So was Michael’s car.
Only Sarah’s vehicle remained.
I walked inside.
The living room was empty.
“Michael?””
No answer.
“Sarah?””
Silence.
Then I saw a note on the table.
My brother’s handwriting.
*Upstairs. The office. Come alone.*
I walked toward the stairs.
Every instinct told me something was wrong.
But I kept going.
When I opened the office door, Michael was standing by the window.
He looked exhausted.
Older.
Like the weight of his secrets had finally caught up with him.
“You came.””
I closed the door.
“You said you found out who was behind this.””
He nodded.
“I did.””
“Then start talking.””
Michael looked down.
“I owe you the truth.””
I laughed quietly.
“You owe me a lot more than that.””
He accepted that.
“I know.””
For a few seconds, he said nothing.
Then he opened a folder sitting on the desk.
Inside were old documents.
Older than anything I had seen.
“These belonged to our father.””
I looked at the papers.
“What are they?””
“Letters.””
“From who?””
Michael swallowed.
“From your mother.””
I froze.
My mother had died when I was young.
There were barely any memories left.
“What does she have to do with this?””
Michael pushed the papers toward me.
“Everything.””
I opened the first letter.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But the name at the bottom made my hands shake.
*Emily Miller.*
My mother.
I read the first line.
I know what happened, and I know who caused it.
I looked up.
“What happened?””
Michael sat down.
“Before Dad died, he discovered someone had been stealing from the company.””
“Who?””
He looked at me.
“Our business partner.””
I frowned.
“Our family had business partners?””
Michael nodded.
“The company wasn’t always just Dad’s. Someone helped him build it.””
“Who?””
Michael hesitated.
Then said:
“Daniel Brooks’ father.””
Everything clicked.
Daniel wasn’t just our family attorney.
His family had been connected to ours for decades.
Michael continued.
“When Dad discovered money disappearing, he confronted them.””
“And?””
“He was told to stay quiet.””
I stared at him.
“You’re saying my father was threatened?””
Michael nodded.
“And your mother found out.””
I looked back at the letter.
My hands trembled.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Michael looked away.
“Because Dad made us promise.””
“Who?””
“You.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He said if anything happened, we were not supposed to tell you until you were ready.””
I shook my head.
“I was never ready because nobody gave me a chance.””
Michael didn’t argue.
He couldn’t.
Then I saw another document.
A signature.
A transfer agreement.
I recognized the name.
Daniel Brooks.
My eyes narrowed.
“Why is Daniel’s name here?””
Michael became quiet.
“Because he wasn’t protecting your inheritance.””
I looked at him.
“What was he doing?””
Michael whispered:
“He was trying to claim it.””
The room went silent.
Then the office door opened.
Sarah stood there.
Her face was pale.
“You finally told him.””
Michael stood.
“Sarah.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“You deserve the whole truth.””
I stared at her.
“You knew?””
She nodded slowly.
“I knew pieces.””
“Pieces?””
“I knew Daniel wanted control.””
“Then why work with him?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I thought he was the only person who could help me.””
I stepped back.
“You trusted him over me.””
She didn’t answer.
Because she knew.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Ryan.
One photo.
A picture of a document.
And beneath it:
*James, I found the missing page from your father’s will.*
I opened the image.
The page contained one sentence.
The sentence my father had hidden from everyone.
*The person who exposes the betrayal will inherit control of everything.*
May you like
Then another message appeared.
*But you need to know who signed this page first.*
