Chapter 5: The Family Secret
My brother’s words hit harder than anything Sarah had said that morning.
I walked down the stairs slowly.
Every step felt heavier.
Michael had always been the person I trusted most after my parents passed away.
He was the one who helped me buy my first house.
The one who stood beside me at my wedding.
The one who told me family was the only thing that mattered.
Now he was standing in my living room, looking at Ryan like he had seen a ghost.
“What job?”” I asked again.
Michael looked away.
That was when I knew.
He was hiding something too.
“Michael.””
He rubbed his face.
“James, this isn’t what you think.””
I laughed quietly.
“That’s what everyone says right before they explain exactly what I think.””
Sarah walked downstairs behind me.
“Michael, why are you here?””
He looked at her.
“I came to fix this.””
“Fix what?””
His silence answered for him.
I grabbed the folder from his hand.
He tried to stop me.
“James, wait.””
I opened it.
Inside were copies of property records.
Bank documents.
And photographs.
Photographs of my house.
My office.
My safe.
My family.
My hands tightened.
“Why do you have pictures of my house?””
Michael looked ashamed.
“I was investigating.””
“Investigating me?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“Investigating Ryan.””
I looked at Ryan.
The lawn worker who was no longer just a lawn worker.
“Who are you?””
Ryan looked down.
For the first time, he seemed tired.
Not scared.
Tired.
“My real name isn’t Ryan.””
The room went silent.
Sarah stared at him.
“What?””
He reached into his wallet and pulled out an identification card.
“I work for a private investigation company.””
I looked at the card.
Then at him.
“So you lied about everything?””
“I was hired to investigate financial fraud.””
“By who?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Michael answered.
“Me.””
The word felt like a punch.
“You hired him?””
Michael nodded.
“I noticed money missing from the family trust.””
I stared at him.
“What family trust?””
“The one our father created before he died.””
My heart stopped.
My father had died ten years earlier.
Before that, he had always talked about making sure his children were protected.
But I thought everything had been divided already.
“There was a trust?””
Michael nodded.
“And someone has been moving money from it.””
I looked at Sarah.
Her expression changed.
“I didn’t know about that.””
Ryan looked at her.
“That’s not what your messages said.””
Sarah’s face turned pale.
“What messages?””
Ryan opened his phone.
“There were messages between you and someone discussing the trust.””
My wife stepped back.
“I never talked about a trust.””
Michael walked closer.
“Then why did you meet with my attorney last month?””
Sarah froze.
The room went silent.
I looked at her.
“You met with Michael’s attorney?””
She swallowed.
“I can explain.””
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
“I’m done hearing explanations.””
Sarah’s eyes filled with anger.
“You think I’m the only one who lied?””
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
She pointed at Michael.
“He never told you the truth about your father.””
Michael’s face changed.
“Sarah.””
“No.””
She stepped forward.
“You deserve to know.””
My heart started pounding.
“What truth?””
Michael looked at me.
“James, don’t listen to her.””
Sarah smiled sadly.
“That’s exactly what he said when he took your inheritance.””
I turned toward Michael.
“What inheritance?””
Nobody answered.
Then Michael slowly sat down.
And whispered:
“Our father left you something.””
I waited.
“What?””
Michael looked up.
“Something worth millions.””
The room went completely silent.
Then my phone buzzed.
A new email.
From my father’s estate attorney.
