Chapter 3: The Name On The Papers

I couldn’t speak.

The house I had worked for fifteen years to buy.

The house where my children took their first steps.

The house where I thought my family was safe.

Now my wife and a lawn worker were standing in my bedroom with documents that could change everything.

Sarah walked toward Ryan.

“Don’t say another word.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She ignored me.

“Ryan, give me the box.””

Ryan shook his head.

“No.””

That surprised me.

Sarah stared at him.

“You work for me.””

Ryan’s expression changed.

“No, Sarah. I worked for the person who hired me.””

The room went quiet.

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Ryan looked down.

“I was hired to find out if someone was illegally accessing your property records.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“By who?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

“There are messages.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Ryan, don’t.””

But he already opened them.

The first message was from Sarah.

*Make sure he doesn’t find the box before I finish.*

My stomach dropped.

The second message was worse.

*Once the papers are changed, James won’t be able to stop me.*

I looked at my wife.

The woman who had kissed me goodbye that morning.

The woman who had smiled at me while hiding this entire thing.

“Why?”” I whispered.

Sarah’s eyes filled with anger.

“You want to know why?””

“Yes.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Because I spent twelve years building a life where everything belonged to you.””

I stared at her.

“That’s what you think?””

“You always made the decisions. The house. The investments. The accounts.””

“Because we discussed those things together.””

“No,” she snapped.

“You decided, and I followed.””

I looked at Ryan.

“So she hired you?””

Ryan nodded.

“But she didn’t tell me everything.””

Sarah’s face tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

Ryan looked at me.

“She told me the safe contained evidence that you were hiding money.””

I shook my head.

“That’s a lie.””

“I know.””

The confidence in his voice caught me off guard.

“How?””

Ryan unlocked his phone and showed me another message.

A message from someone else.

Someone whose name I recognized.

My lawyer.

My heart stopped.

“What is that?””

Ryan hesitated.

“Your attorney contacted me last week.””

I grabbed the phone.

The message was short.

*If James asks, tell him the truth. The documents were never meant to be hidden from him.*

I looked at Sarah.

“What did you do?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she rushed toward Ryan’s phone.

I stepped between them.

“No.””

For the first time that morning, Sarah looked afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Because she knew I had finally seen through everything.

I opened the document box.

Inside were several folders.

Property records.

Bank statements.

Legal documents.

Then I saw the name written across the top page.

Not mine.

Not Sarah’s.

Someone else’s.

My hands started shaking as I read the first line.

*Transfer Agreement — Prepared by Sarah Miller, granting full control of James Miller’s estate to…*

I stopped.

Because the name at the bottom of the page was someone I never expected.

Someone who had been in my house.

Someone Sarah had been talking to for months.

And then my phone buzzed again.

This time, it wasn’t a security alert.

It was a message from an unknown number.

A single sentence appeared on the screen:

*James, don’t trust Ryan. He’s the reason Sarah was able to open the safe.*
