Chapter 4: The Man I Thought I Could Trust

I stared at the unknown message until the screen dimmed.

*James, don’t trust Ryan. He’s the reason Sarah was able to open the safe.*

My first instinct was anger.

Then confusion.

Then something worse.

Doubt.

Because the message made sense.

Ryan had been inside my house.

Ryan had the document box.

Ryan knew about the safe.

But Ryan had also just shown me messages that made Sarah look guilty.

Someone was lying.

The question was who.

I looked up.

Ryan was watching me carefully.

“What did you just receive?”” he asked.

I locked my phone.

“Why do you care?””

His expression tightened.

“Because whoever sent that message wants you to think I’m the enemy.””

Sarah let out a bitter laugh.

“Maybe because you are.””

Ryan turned toward her.

“Really? After everything you asked me to do?””

My eyes moved between them.

“What did you ask him to do, Sarah?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the answer.

I stepped back from both of them.

“I want everyone to stop talking around me.””

My voice echoed through the bedroom.

“I want the truth.””

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Ryan slowly placed his phone on the table.

“I’ll tell you everything.””

Sarah’s face changed.

“Ryan, don’t.””

He ignored her.

“She contacted me six weeks ago.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Six weeks?””

Ryan nodded.

“She said she needed help accessing your safe because she believed you were hiding something from her.””

I looked at Sarah.

“You hired someone to break into my safe?””

“No,” she said quickly.

“I didn’t break into anything.””

Ryan shook his head.

“You gave me the code.””

Sarah went silent.

The room felt freezing.

“You gave him my safe code?””

She looked away.

“I thought it was only for documents.””

I stared at her.

“You thought?””

She stepped closer.

“James, you’re making this worse than it is.””

“No.””

I pointed toward the box.

“You brought someone into our bedroom. You opened my safe while I was away. And now you’re telling me I’m overreacting?””

Sarah’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t understand the whole story.””

“Then explain it.””

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me there was more.

Ryan reached into his pocket and pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this inside the safe.””

My eyes followed the envelope.

“What is it?””

He handed it to me.

Inside was a printed email.

The sender was a company I recognized.

My investment company.

The message was addressed to Sarah.

*Regarding your request to change beneficiary information…*

I read the first few lines.

Then I stopped.

Sarah had contacted them.

She had tried to change the beneficiaries on my accounts.

My hands started shaking.

“Why?””

Sarah’s expression hardened.

“Because I was protecting myself.””

“From me?””

“From the possibility that you would leave.””

I stared at her.

“After twelve years, you thought I would leave you with nothing?””

She crossed her arms.

“You never understood what it felt like to have no control.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You had a home.””

“A home that was in your name.””

“You had access to everything.””

“Access isn’t ownership.””

The argument stopped me.

Because underneath her anger was something real.

Something hurt.

But it didn’t excuse what she had done.

Ryan looked uncomfortable.

“I should tell you something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“Sarah wasn’t the only person trying to access your records.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who else?””

Before he answered, the front door slammed downstairs.

All three of us froze.

Sarah’s face changed instantly.

“Someone is here.””

I walked toward the stairs.

“Who?””

No answer.

Then a voice came from below.

“James?””

I stopped.

I knew that voice.

It belonged to the last person I expected to see.

My older brother, Michael.

He appeared at the bottom of the stairs holding a folder.

And when he looked up at Ryan, his face went pale.

“You.””

Ryan stepped backward.

Michael pointed at him.

“You told me the job was done.””

My heart stopped.

“What job?””

Nobody answered.

Michael looked at me.

Then at Sarah.

Then back at Ryan.

May you like

And whispered:

“James… you have no idea who you let into your house.””
