Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Safe
I stared at the phone screen until the words stopped looking real.
Sarah Miller.
My wife.
The person who had shared my bed for twelve years.
The person who knew every password, every fear, every dream I had.
She had opened my safe.
And she had done it without me.
“James,” Sarah whispered.
I looked up.
Her face had changed.
The fear was gone.
Now she looked angry.
“You’re misunderstanding everything.””
I laughed once.
It wasn’t because anything was funny.
It was because I couldn’t believe she was still trying to control the situation.
“Am I?””
I held up my phone.
“The safe was opened two days ago.””
The lawn worker looked uncomfortable for the first time.
Sarah crossed her arms.
“You’re acting like I committed a crime.””
“You brought a stranger into our house and he’s holding my private documents.””
“He’s not a stranger.””
That sentence froze me.
I looked at her.
“What did you say?””
Sarah realized her mistake.
Her mouth closed.
The man stepped forward.
“My name is Ryan.””
I stared at him.
“I don’t care what your name is. I care why you have my property.””
Ryan looked at Sarah.
She gave him a warning look.
That small exchange told me everything.
They had practiced this.
Maybe not the exact words.
But they had prepared for this moment.
I walked toward him.
“Open the box.””
Ryan stepped back.
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because Sarah has the key.””
I turned slowly toward my wife.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
“You have the key?””
Sarah sighed.
“James, listen to me.””
“No. You listen.””
My voice shook.
“What is inside that box?””
She looked away.
That was when I knew.
Whatever was inside mattered.
I reached for my phone again.
Sarah immediately moved toward me.
“Stop recording.””
“I’m not recording.””
She grabbed my wrist.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
I pulled away.
“No, Sarah. I think I finally understand.””
Ryan placed the box on the table.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then he said something that made my heart sink.
“She told me you were going to destroy everything.””
I looked at Sarah.
“What does that mean?””
Sarah’s eyes narrowed.
“She told you that?””
Ryan looked uncomfortable.
“She said you were planning to leave her with nothing.””
I felt like someone had punched me.
After twelve years of marriage, after everything we built together, she had been telling another man I was the enemy.
I shook my head.
“Is that what you told him?””
Sarah didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
I walked downstairs and grabbed my laptop bag.
“I’m calling my attorney.””
Sarah’s face changed instantly.
“No.””
I stopped.
The desperation in her voice surprised me.
“Why?””
“Because you don’t know what you’re walking into.””
I turned around.
“What did you do?””
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then Ryan’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face went pale.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A few seconds passed.
Then his expression changed completely.
“Wait… you’re sure?””
Sarah stepped closer.
“What happened?””
Ryan looked at both of us.
Then he slowly lowered the phone.
“The bank called.””
My heart started racing.
“What bank?””
Ryan looked at Sarah.
“The bank holding the account connected to this box.””
Sarah’s face went white.
Ryan swallowed.
“They said someone tried to transfer ownership of the documents inside.””
I felt a cold wave move through my body.
“What documents?””
Ryan looked at the locked box.
May you like
Then at me.
“The ones proving who actually owns the house.””
