Chapter 8: The Truth Beneath the Gold
My father didn’t touch the second necklace.
Nobody did.
We just stared at it.
It looked almost identical to the one Vanessa had taken.
Same gold chain.
Same small pendant.
But something about it felt different.
Like it had been waiting.
Rebecca covered her mouth.
“She made another one.””
My father looked at her.
“What?””
Rebecca stepped closer.
“Your wife knew.””
My father frowned.
“Stop saying that.””
“Daniel, listen.””
Rebecca pointed at the necklace.
“Your wife knew someone might try to take the first one.””
I looked at my father.
“Mom knew?””
Rebecca nodded.
“She was smarter than anyone realized.””
My father carefully picked up the necklace.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
Rebecca looked sad.
“Because she didn’t want you to become part of the danger.””
Those words hurt.
My father sat down.
“She was my wife.””
“I know.””
“She should have told me.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“She was trying to protect you.””
I looked at the second necklace.
“What is inside?””
Nobody answered.
Then my father noticed a small mark on the pendant.
A symbol.
The same symbol from my mother’s letter.
He grabbed a magnifying glass from the desk.
“There’s something here.””
Rebecca leaned closer.
“The pendant opens differently.””
My father carefully turned the back.
A tiny compartment appeared.
Inside was a small memory card.
I stared.
“What is that?””
Rebecca whispered:
“Proof.””
My father looked at her.
“Proof of what?””
She didn’t answer.
Because at that exact moment, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
I couldn’t hear everything.
But I saw my father’s expression change.
“Where did you get this number?””
Silence.
Then:
“No. You don’t get to threaten me.””
My eyes widened.
Threaten?
My father walked away from us.
“Listen carefully. If you have something to say, say it.””
A pause.
Then he said:
“You’re lying.””
Another pause.
His face became angry.
“Vanessa, where are you?””
My heart stopped.
He ended the call.
“Was that her?””
He nodded.
“She wants to meet.””
“Why?””
He looked at the necklace.
“Because she knows we found something.””
My father didn’t want to go.
I could tell.
But he also knew he needed answers.
Rebecca stayed with me while he met Vanessa.
Before leaving, he knelt beside me.
“Sophie, no matter what happens, remember one thing.””
“What?””
“Your mother loved you.””
I nodded.
“But what if Vanessa was telling the truth?””
His face softened.
“About what?””
“About Mom having secrets.””
My father took my hands.
“Everyone has things they keep private.””
He paused.
“But secrets meant to hurt people are different.””
After he left, Rebecca and I sat in silence.
Finally, she spoke.
“Your mother was afraid of Vanessa.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Rebecca sighed.
“Because Vanessa was very good at pretending.””
I remembered how Vanessa smiled when Dad came home.
How quickly she changed.
“How did she get close to us?””
Rebecca looked down.
“Because she studied your family.””
My stomach turned.
“What?””
“She knew what your mother had.””
She looked at me.
“And she knew what you would inherit.””
I stared.
“You mean the necklace?””
Rebecca shook her head.
“No.””
The room went quiet.
“Something much bigger.””
I wanted to ask more.
But Rebecca’s phone suddenly buzzed.
She looked at the screen.
Then her face changed.
“What?””
She didn’t answer.
She slowly turned the phone toward me.
It wasn’t a message.
It was a photograph.
A picture of my father meeting Vanessa.
But the photo wasn’t from today.
It was from years ago.
Before Vanessa married him.
Before my mother died.
May you like
Rebecca whispered:
“She was already watching your family.””
