Chapter 12: The Recording My Mother Hid

Nobody spoke.

Not even Vanessa.

The room felt frozen.

My father stared at her.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa’s confidence returned slightly.

“You heard me.””

Claire looked angry.

“Don’t do this.””

Vanessa ignored her.

“Daniel, your wife never told you everything.””

My father’s voice was quiet.

“Stop.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You deserve to know.””

Rebecca stepped forward.

“She’s trying to distract you.””

But my father looked uncertain.

And that hurt.

Because Vanessa knew exactly where to push.

She knew what questions could break people.

“What did my wife hide?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Play the recording.””

My father looked at Rebecca.

She connected the memory card to a small device.

Everyone gathered around.

Then my mother’s voice filled the room.

I stopped breathing.

“Hello, Daniel.””

My father immediately closed his eyes.

Hearing her voice again broke something inside him.

It was like my mother had walked back into the room.

“If you’re hearing this,” my mother continued, “then something happened that I hoped would never happen.””

My father held onto the table.

My mother’s voice continued.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

A pause.

“Vanessa will probably try to make you believe I didn’t trust you.””

My father looked at Vanessa.

“But that isn’t true.””

Tears filled my eyes.

My mother knew.

She knew exactly what would happen.

“She was never the person I was afraid of.””

Everyone became still.

My mother continued:

“The person I was afraid of was the person she was protecting.””

My father frowned.

“What?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“No.””

The recording continued.

“I discovered Vanessa was being controlled by someone else.””

My father looked confused.

“Someone else?””

Rebecca whispered.

“Oh no.””

My mother’s voice continued.

“She was not acting alone.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“That’s not true.””

My father looked at her.

“Who?””

The recording went silent for a moment.

Then my mother said a name.

A name that made Vanessa’s face lose all color.

My father whispered:

“No.””

I looked between them.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then the recording continued.

“Daniel, if you’re listening to this, you need to know…”

Another pause.

“Vanessa was never trying to enter our family.””

My father looked at the device.

“She was sent.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with fear.

My father turned toward her.

“Who sent you?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Still nothing.

Then her phone suddenly rang.

Everyone looked at it.

The screen lit up.

Vanessa stared at the name.

And for the first time…

she looked completely terrified.

My father stepped closer.

“Who is calling you?””

Vanessa slowly lowered the phone.

Nobody moved.

Then she whispered:

“The person who started all of this.””

May you like

The phone kept ringing.

And on the screen was the name of someone my father thought had been dead for years.
