Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Memory Box

My father had always been the calmest person I knew.

Even after my mother died, when our entire world felt broken, he was the person who kept everything together.

He was the one who packed my lunch every morning.

The one who sat beside my bed when nightmares woke me up.

The one who told me, “Your mom’s love didn’t disappear. It just changed places.””

But that night, standing in front of the broken memory box, he looked like a completely different person.

He carefully placed his phone on the cabinet.

“Vanessa,” he said quietly, “I need you to explain something.””

She forced a laugh.

“Explain what?””

Dad pointed at the necklace.

“That.””

Vanessa touched the pendant.

“I already told you. You gave it to me.””

My father stared at her.

“No, I didn’t.””

The room went silent.

My stomach twisted.

Vanessa looked at him like she couldn’t believe he had just contradicted her.

“Daniel, don’t do this.””

“Do what?””

“Make me look like I’m lying in front of Sophie.””

I looked between them.

For the first time, Vanessa didn’t look confident.

She looked nervous.

Dad opened the memory box completely.

Inside were my mother’s old photographs, a few handwritten notes, and the small velvet case where the necklace had always been kept.

Except now the case was empty.

My father picked it up.

His fingers were shaking.

“Sophie,” he said softly, “come here.””

I walked closer.

He looked at me.

“Did Vanessa ever ask you about this necklace?””

I hesitated.

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“Daniel, she’s a child. She’s confused.””

Dad looked at her.

“No. I asked Sophie.””

The way he said it made Vanessa go quiet.

I swallowed.

“She asked me why I cared about it so much.””

Dad’s expression tightened.

“When?””

“Last week.””

Vanessa looked away.

Dad noticed.

That was when I knew he believed me.

Not completely.

Not yet.

But enough.

He took a deep breath.

“Vanessa, this necklace was in that box because your mother left it specifically for Sophie.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She was my wife too.””

Dad’s eyes widened.

“She was my wife.””

The words hung in the room.

Vanessa looked angry.

“I loved her too.””

“No, you didn’t.””

Dad’s voice was low.

“You met her twice.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She had never told me that.

She always talked about my mother like they were close.

Like she understood her.

But now my dad was saying something different.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You’re choosing a child’s story over your wife?””

Dad looked at me.

Then back at her.

“I’m choosing the truth.””

My eyes filled with tears.

I wanted to believe everything would be okay.

I wanted him to fix it like he fixed everything else.

But then Vanessa said something that made my heart drop.

“You should be careful, Daniel.””

Dad frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She smiled slightly.

“It means you don’t know everything your daughter has been doing.””

I froze.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She’s been going through my things.””

I immediately shook my head.

“No, I haven’t!””

Dad looked confused.

“Vanessa.””

“She’s angry because I’m not her mother.””

Her voice became emotional.

“She’s been trying to make me look bad since we got married.””

I couldn’t believe it.

“That’s not true!””

My father knelt beside me.

“Sophie, tell me exactly what happened.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was staring at me.

Not with anger this time.

With a warning.

I remembered her whisper.

You’re going to tell your father you fell.

My voice trembled.

“She pushed me.””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

Then she laughed.

“She pushed me?””

Dad stood up slowly.

“Vanessa.””

“I’m serious!””

She pointed at me.

“She grabbed the necklace and pulled. She fell because she was throwing a tantrum.””

My father looked at me.

Then he looked at the camera on his phone.

A strange silence filled the hallway.

Vanessa noticed.

Her face changed.

“Daniel?””

My father unlocked his phone.

“I’m going to watch the footage.””

For the first time that night, Vanessa looked afraid.

She reached toward him.

“Wait.””

Dad stopped.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

And that was the moment I knew.

She wasn’t afraid of the camera.

She was afraid of what the camera would prove.

My father pressed play.

The screen was too small for me to see everything, but I saw his face change as he watched.

First confusion.

Then anger.

Then heartbreak.

After a few seconds, he looked up at Vanessa.

“Why did you lie to me?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Dad turned the phone toward her.

“You didn’t just steal the necklace.””

He paused.

“You opened the memory box.””

Vanessa’s lips parted.

May you like

And then my father said something that made her step backward.

“Because the camera caught you taking something else.””
