Chapter 7: The Hidden Room

The sound came from upstairs.

A single crash.

Then silence.

My father stood frozen for half a second.

Then he moved.

“Sophie, stay behind me.””

I grabbed his sleeve.

“Dad, what is happening?””

He looked toward the staircase.

“I don’t know.””

But his face told me he had a fear he wasn’t saying out loud.

We walked upstairs slowly.

Every step felt louder than it should have.

The hallway light flickered above us.

My father reached the top of the stairs and stopped.

The door to his office was open.

It had been closed when we left.

He looked at me.

“Did you come in here today?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He stepped forward.

Inside, papers were scattered across the floor.

The drawers were open.

Someone had searched the room.

My father immediately walked to the desk.

The old photograph from my mother’s letter was gone.

“So she came back,” he whispered.

I looked at him.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

Then he noticed something else.

A small piece of paper sitting on the desk.

He picked it up.

His expression changed.

“What does it say?””

He turned it toward himself.

Then slowly folded it.

“Nothing.””

I knew he was lying.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“You need to trust me.””

“I do.””

“Then trust me when I say I need to handle this.””

That answer scared me.

Because it sounded like he was trying to protect me from something bigger.

The next morning, my father called the police.

I sat on the couch while officers walked through the house.

One of them asked questions.

“Did anyone else have access to the home?””

My father hesitated.

Then he answered.

“My wife.””

The officer looked at him.

“Your wife?””

“She’s my soon-to-be ex-wife.””

I had never heard him say that before.

It felt strange.

Like everything had changed overnight.

After they left, my father sat beside me.

“Sophie.””

“Yeah?””

“There’s something I need to tell you.””

I looked at him.

“Okay.””

He took a deep breath.

“Your mother didn’t just leave you a necklace.””

I waited.

“She left instructions.””

“Instructions?””

He nodded.

“About your future.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because your mother knew something could happen.””

The words made my stomach hurt.

“She knew Vanessa?””

My father looked away.

“She knew someone was watching our family.””

I remembered Vanessa’s words.

Your mother left secrets.

I hated that she was making me question my own mother.

Later that day, Rebecca came to our house.

She brought a small leather folder.

“This is what I found.””

My father opened it carefully.

Inside were old notes.

Pictures.

And a key.

I stared at it.

“What is that?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“Your mother hid it.””

“Where?””

Rebecca looked toward the hallway.

“Somewhere in this house.””

My father frowned.

“She never told me.””

“She couldn’t.””

“Why?””

Rebecca looked serious.

“Because she didn’t know who she could trust.””

The room became silent.

My father looked hurt.

“You’re saying she didn’t trust me?””

“No.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“She loved you.””

She touched the folder.

“But she was afraid of what would happen if the wrong person found out.””

My father picked up the key.

“What does it open?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“Something your mother wanted Sophie to discover herself.””

That night, my father and I searched the house.

Closets.

Drawers.

Every place we could think of.

Then I noticed something.

A small scratch on the wall behind an old bookshelf.

“Dad.””

He came over.

I pushed the bookshelf slightly.

It moved.

Behind it was a tiny door.

My father stared.

“I’ve lived here for years.””

Rebecca stepped closer.

“Your mother built this before she died.””

My father unlocked it.

Inside was a small hidden room.

And sitting in the center was a wooden box.

My hands covered my mouth.

Because on top of the box was a picture of my mother.

And beside it was a note.

My father picked it up.

His face went pale.

“What does it say?””

He read silently.

Then he looked at me.

“Sophie…”

“What?””

He handed me the note.

It said:

If you found this, it means Vanessa discovered the first box.

But she still doesn’t know about the second one.

My heart started beating faster.

I looked at my father.

“Why would Mom write her name?””

Nobody answered.

Then the wooden box suddenly moved.

Not because of us.

Because something inside was pressing against the lid.

My father opened it.

May you like

And inside was something that made Rebecca gasp.

A second necklace.
