Chapter 11: The Last Page
My father didn’t sleep that night.
Neither did I.
The entire house felt different.
Like every wall had been hiding something.
Claire stayed with us.
She told me stories about my mother.
Not the sad ones.
The happy ones.
“She used to sing while cooking,” Claire said.
I smiled.
“She did that.””
Claire laughed.
“Terribly.””
For the first time in days, I laughed too.
But the happiness disappeared when my father walked into the room.
“We found Vanessa.””
Everyone became quiet.
“Where?””
He looked at Claire.
“She went to the old family office.””
Claire’s face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
“That’s where your mother kept the original records.””
My father grabbed his coat.
“I’m going.””
“I’m coming.””
He looked at me.
“No.””
“Dad—”
“No, Sophie.””
His voice softened.
“You’ve already been through enough.””
I wanted to argue.
But I saw the fear in his eyes.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for me.
So I nodded.
Before leaving, he hugged me.
“I’ll be back.””
I whispered:
“Bring Mom’s truth home.””
He held me tighter.
“I will.””
The family office was an old building downtown.
My father arrived with Claire and Rebecca.
Vanessa was waiting.
She stood beside a table.
And in her hand was a folder.
The missing page.
My father stopped.
“Give it back.””
Vanessa smiled.
“You still think I’m the problem.””
“You hurt my daughter.””
Her smile faded.
“I never wanted to hurt her.””
“You pushed her.””
Silence.
Vanessa looked down.
Then away.
“I lost control.””
My father shook his head.
“That’s not an excuse.””
Vanessa looked at the folder.
“Do you know what your wife did?””
My father’s expression changed.
“Don’t talk about her.””
“She ruined my life.””
Claire stepped forward.
“No.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You.””
Claire’s voice was calm.
“You made choices.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You have no idea.””
My father looked at the folder.
“What’s on that page?””
Vanessa held it tighter.
“Everything.””
“Meaning?””
She smiled.
“Meaning I know why your wife trusted nobody.””
My father stared.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I made mistakes.””
Rebecca stepped forward.
“Mistakes don’t explain everything.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You think you know the truth?””
She looked at my father.
“Your wife knew I had problems.””
My father said nothing.
“She knew I was desperate.””
“And?””
Vanessa’s voice became emotional.
“And she refused to help me.””
Claire shook her head.
“That’s not what happened.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You weren’t there.””
“No.””
Claire stepped closer.
“But your sister was.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa froze.
My father noticed.
“What are you talking about?””
Claire looked at him.
“Your wife recorded a conversation.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What?””
Rebecca whispered:
“The necklace wasn’t the only thing with a hidden compartment.””
My father looked shocked.
“Where?””
Claire answered:
“The second pendant.””
Vanessa stepped backward.
For the first time, she looked terrified.
Because she realized something.
She didn’t have everything.
My father slowly reached into his pocket.
He pulled out the second necklace.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“No.””
My father looked at her.
“You were searching for the wrong thing.””
He opened the pendant.
Inside was the memory card.
Vanessa whispered:
“You don’t know how to open it.””
Claire smiled sadly.
“Your mother taught me.””
My father looked at Rebecca.
“Can we access it?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.””
Vanessa suddenly moved toward the door.
My father stopped her.
“Where are you going?””
She turned around.
Her eyes filled with panic.
“Daniel…”
He stared at her.
“What?””
She whispered:
“You really don’t want to hear what’s on that recording.””
And then she said the one thing that made everyone in the room go silent.
“Because your wife wasn’t afraid of me.””
May you like
She looked at the necklace.
“She was afraid of what I would reveal about you.””
