Chapter 13: The Person Behind Everything
The phone kept ringing.
Nobody moved.
The sound echoed through the empty office like a warning.
My father stared at Vanessa.
“Answer it.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
Her hands started trembling.
“Because you don’t understand.””
My father stepped closer.
“I understand that someone has been controlling my family for years.””
Vanessa looked at him.
For the first time, I didn’t see the confident woman who used to walk through our house like she owned it.
I saw someone scared.
She slowly pressed the answer button.
“Hello?””
A voice came through the speaker.
An older man.
Calm.
Cold.
“Vanessa.””
Everyone heard it.
My father’s face changed.
“Who is that?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
The voice continued.
“You should have left before they found the second pendant.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I tried.””
The man laughed quietly.
“You always were weak.””
My father grabbed the phone.
“Who are you?””
Silence.
Then the man replied:
“Daniel.””
My father froze.
The voice sounded familiar.
Not because he knew the man.
Because the confidence sounded like someone who believed they could never lose.
“You have something that belongs to me.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“Nothing in this family belongs to you.””
The man laughed.
“Your wife thought the same thing.””
My hands became cold.
My mother.
He was talking about my mother.
My father looked at Vanessa.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa whispered:
“I didn’t know it would go this far.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“You knew enough.””
The man on the phone spoke again.
“Vanessa was supposed to recover the documents.””
My father looked at the folder.
“She was supposed to steal from us?””
“No.””
The voice became sharper.
“She was supposed to correct a mistake your wife made.””
Claire stepped forward.
“You’re talking about the trust.””
The line went silent.
Then the man said:
“Who is that?””
Claire looked at the phone.
“My name is Claire.””
A pause.
“Your sister.””
The man immediately hung up.
Nobody spoke.
My father stared at the phone.
“He knew her.””
Claire nodded slowly.
“Because he knew your mother.””
I looked at her.
“Who is he?””
Claire took a deep breath.
“Your mother’s uncle.””
My father looked confused.
“Her uncle?””
“Yes.””
Rebecca whispered:
“The person who controlled the family trust.””
My father sat down.
I watched his face.
Everything he believed about my mother’s family was changing.
“Why would he do this?””
Claire answered:
“Because your mother changed the trust.””
My father looked up.
“What?””
“She discovered he had been using family money for years.””
The room became silent.
“He wanted control.””
Claire looked at me.
“And when your mother refused, he decided Sophie would be the easiest way to regain it.””
My father stood.
“He used Vanessa.””
“Yes.””
Rebecca looked at the floor.
“Vanessa wasn’t the mastermind.””
I looked toward Vanessa.
She was crying silently.
“Then why did she hurt me?””
Nobody answered.
Until Vanessa finally spoke.
“Because I was scared.””
My father looked at her.
“You scared a child.””
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“I know.””
She looked at me.
“I was wrong.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Part of me wanted to hate her.
Another part of me remembered the woman who had lived in our home.
My father walked toward the door.
“We’re going to the police.””
Vanessa looked up.
“Daniel.””
He stopped.
“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””
She swallowed.
“But you need to hear the rest.””
My father turned around.
“What rest?””
Vanessa looked at the recording device.
“Your wife knew he would come after Sophie.””
My father froze.
Vanessa whispered:
“She prepared for it.””
My father looked at the necklace.
“What else did she leave?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Something that was never meant for you to find until today.””
May you like
She pointed toward the folder.
“Your mother left one final message.””
