Chapter 6: The Truth Vanessa Wanted Buried

After meeting Rebecca, my father barely spoke.

The entire drive home, his hands stayed tightly on the steering wheel.

I sat in the passenger seat holding my mother’s letter.

I wanted answers.

But I was scared of what those answers would be.

When we arrived home, Vanessa was standing outside.

I froze.

She wasn’t supposed to be there.

My father immediately got out of the car.

“What are you doing here?””

Vanessa looked exhausted.

“I need to talk.””

“No.””

Her eyes moved toward me.

“Sophie, can you go inside?””

My father stepped between us.

“She stays.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I didn’t come here to fight.””

My father laughed quietly.

“Then why did you come?””

She looked at the necklace.

“Because you don’t understand.””

I felt my hands tighten.

“You took it.””

Vanessa looked at me.

And for the first time, she looked guilty.

“I made a mistake.””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

“I panicked.””

“You stole from a child.””

Her face changed.

“I didn’t steal from her.””

She pointed toward the necklace.

“I was protecting something.””

I looked at my father.

“Protecting what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then she looked away.

“I can’t tell you.””

My father stepped forward.

“Then tell me.””

She was silent.

“Vanessa.””

Finally, she whispered:

“Your mother knew.””

The words felt like a storm.

“Knew what?””

Vanessa looked at my father.

“She knew about me.””

My father’s face hardened.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You think I’m the villain because of a necklace.””

“You broke into her memory box.””

“I was looking for something.””

“What?””

She didn’t answer.

That was when my father’s patience disappeared.

“You don’t get to walk into this house, hurt my daughter, and refuse to explain.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Sophie, your mother wasn’t the person you think she was.””

My father immediately moved closer.

“Enough.””

But I stopped him.

“No.””

They both looked at me.

I held my mother’s letter.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she said:

“Your mother left secrets.””

The word echoed.

My father looked angry.

“Get out.””

Vanessa grabbed her bag.

But before she walked away, she turned around.

“Ask Rebecca why your mother never told you everything.””

Then she left.

That night, my father sat beside me on my bed.

“You don’t have to believe her.””

“I don’t know what to believe.””

He looked heartbroken.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For bringing someone into our lives who hurt you.””

I leaned against him.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Did Mom trust you?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“More than anyone.””

“Then why did she hide things?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

The next morning, Rebecca called.

My father put her on speaker.

“I found something,” she said.

My father stood immediately.

“What?””

“A second compartment.””

My heart started racing.

“Inside the necklace?””

“Yes.””

My father looked at me.

Rebecca continued.

“Your mother made sure nobody could open it without damaging the pendant.””

“Then how did Vanessa know?””

Silence.

Then Rebecca said:

“She didn’t.””

My father frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“She wasn’t looking for the necklace.””

The room became completely still.

“She was looking for what was hidden somewhere else.””

My father’s face changed.

“Where?””

Rebecca’s voice became quiet.

“Inside the memory box.””

I looked at my father.

“But the box was empty.””

Rebecca answered:

“No.””

A pause.

“Vanessa took something before she ever touched the necklace.””

My father gripped the phone.

“What did she take?””

Rebecca whispered:

“The original document your mother left behind.””

My heart stopped.

“What document?””

Rebecca took a breath.

“The one that could prove Vanessa was never supposed to be part of your family.””

My father went silent.

Then the call ended.

And from upstairs…

May you like

we heard something fall.

Someone was inside the house.
