Chapter 8: The Truth My Mother Was Afraid to Write
I stared at the paper until the words stopped looking real.
Daniel Carter.
My father’s name.
The man standing beside me.
The man who had held me when I cried as a child.
The man who had walked into my bedroom the night before graduation and destroyed Mia’s designer bag because he finally saw what was happening.
My mind couldn’t accept it.
“No,” I whispered.
Dad looked at the paper.
His face changed.
Not anger.
Pain.
“Emily…”
I pulled my hand back.
“Did my mother think you did something?””
Dad looked like I had physically hurt him.
“No.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Wait.””
I turned to him.
“What?””
He looked serious.
“Your mother wrote that sentence before she had all the answers.””
Dad looked at him.
“Then why show it to her?””
Thomas sighed.
“Because she deserves to know what her mother feared.””
I looked at the paper again.
My mother.
The woman whose voice I barely remembered.
The woman who had tried to protect me even after death.
She had suspected everyone.
Including my father.
Dad sat down.
“I need to understand.””
Thomas nodded.
“So do I.””
Vanessa was standing near the wall, silent.
For once, she wasn’t trying to control the conversation.
She looked broken.
Dad looked at her.
“You knew about this.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I knew she suspected you.””
My heart dropped.
“You knew my mother suspected Dad?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told him?””
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“I was afraid.””
Dad stood.
“You were afraid?””
“I thought if I told you, everything would fall apart.””
Thomas laughed quietly.
“Everything already fell apart.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” Thomas said.
“I understand exactly.””
I looked at Dad.
“Why would Mom suspect you?””
The question hurt him.
I saw it.
But he answered.
“Because after she got sick, I made mistakes.””
“What mistakes?””
He looked down.
“I trusted the wrong people.””
Thomas nodded.
“That’s the part nobody talks about.””
He opened another document.
“Daniel was listed as the person who approved some financial changes.””
Dad stared.
“What?””
Thomas pointed.
“But the signatures don’t match.””
Dad looked closer.
“This isn’t my signature.””
“I know.””
Everyone went silent.
Thomas continued.
“Someone used Daniel’s name.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
Dad noticed.
“You knew.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I suspected.””
The anger returned.
“You suspected someone was forging my signature and you said nothing?””
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
“Of losing Mia.””
I frowned.
“What does Mia have to do with this?””
Vanessa started crying.
And that was when I realized.
Mia wasn’t just a spoiled daughter.
She was another person Vanessa had manipulated.
“I made a deal,” Vanessa whispered.
Dad froze.
“What deal?””
Vanessa looked at Thomas.
Then at me.
“I thought I could fix everything before anyone found out.””
“What deal?”” Dad repeated.
She took a shaky breath.
“Someone promised to make the trust disappear.””
My blood ran cold.
“Someone?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Someone who knew your mother.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
Then she said:
“Your mother’s brother.””
I blinked.
“My uncle?””
I had never met my mother’s brother.
I didn’t even know he existed.
Dad looked confused.
“Your mother had a brother?””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t I know?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Because your wife cut contact with him years before she died.””
“Why?””
Thomas’s expression became serious.
“Because she found out he wasn’t trying to protect Emily.””
The room went silent.
“He was trying to control what Emily inherited.””
My phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
Another unknown message.
This time there was a photo.
I opened it.
It showed my mother.
Standing beside a man.
A man I didn’t recognize.
But Thomas did.
His face changed.
“That’s him.””
I looked up.
“Who?””
Thomas whispered:
“Your uncle.””
I stared at the photo.
Then I noticed something.
My mother wasn’t smiling.
She looked afraid.
May you like
And written beneath the photo was a message.
He knows you found the letter.
