Chapter 14: The Day I Finally Learned Why My Mother Died
The courthouse was less than fifteen minutes away.
But the drive felt endless.
Nobody spoke.
Dad drove.
Thomas sat beside him.
I sat in the back with Mia.
The girl who had destroyed my dress.
The girl who had helped uncover the truth.
Life was strange.
Sometimes the person who hurt you was also someone who had been hurt.
But that didn’t erase what happened.
Mia looked out the window.
“I’m sorry.””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because I wasn’t ready to forgive her.
“I believe you were manipulated.””
She looked at me.
“But you still chose to hurt me.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
That was all she said.
No excuses.
No blaming.
Just the truth.
When we arrived, the courthouse entrance was crowded.
People walking.
Lawyers carrying files.
Security officers checking bags.
Then I saw him.
Richard.
Standing near the steps.
Waiting.
Dad immediately stepped forward.
“You.””
Richard smiled.
“I knew you would come.””
Thomas looked around.
“Where is the evidence?””
Richard laughed.
“You still don’t understand.””
Dad’s voice was cold.
“What?””
“This was never about the money.””
I froze.
Richard looked at me.
“It was about control.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
He walked closer.
“Your mother was stubborn.””
Dad clenched his fists.
“Watch your words.””
Richard ignored him.
“She thought she could expose everyone and still protect you.””
Thomas stared.
“Everyone?””
Richard smiled.
“She didn’t know how many people were involved.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who else?””
Richard looked toward the courthouse doors.
And said:
“Your father.””
The world seemed to stop.
Dad went silent.
“No.””
Richard pulled out a folder.
“Your mother found financial records.””
He handed them to me.
I opened it.
My hands shook.
Transfers.
Documents.
Signatures.
But something was wrong.
The signatures weren’t Dad’s.
They were copies.
Forged.
Richard watched my face.
“Someone used his identity.””
Dad looked at him.
“You.””
Richard smiled.
Finally.
The truth was there.
“You used my name.””
Richard shrugged.
“You were the perfect person to blame.””
Dad stepped forward.
“Why?””
Richard’s expression changed.
“Because your wife trusted you.””
I felt sick.
He had built everything around destroying trust.
Making everyone suspect each other.
Richard continued.
“Your mother discovered the fraud.””
Thomas nodded.
“And you needed someone else to take the blame.””
Richard looked at Vanessa.
Everyone turned.
Vanessa lowered her head.
“I’m sorry.””
Dad stared.
“You knew.””
She cried.
“I knew some of it.””
The confession broke him.
“How much?””
“I knew Richard was using your name.””
Dad looked devastated.
“And you said nothing.””
“I was afraid.””
I looked at her.
“You always say that.””
Vanessa looked at me.
This time, she didn’t defend herself.
“Because it’s true.””
Richard laughed.
“She was useful.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You promised me Mia would be safe.””
Richard smiled.
“And you believed me.””
The police officers nearby suddenly moved toward us.
One officer approached.
“Richard Blake?””
Richard looked annoyed.
“Yes?””
“You need to come with us.””
His expression changed.
“What?””
The officer held up documents.
“We have a warrant.””
Richard looked around.
Then at me.
“This isn’t over.””
The officer grabbed his arm.
“Yes, it is.””
As they walked away, Dad stood frozen.
Then he looked at me.
“I need to tell you something.””
I already knew it would hurt.
“What?””
He looked toward the courthouse doors.
“Your mother’s final message wasn’t just for you.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
He handed me another envelope.
My name was on it.
But underneath mine was another name.
Daniel.
My father.
I opened it.
The first sentence was written in my mother’s handwriting.
Daniel,
If Emily finds this, it means I was right about Richard.
But there is something else you need to know.
I looked up.
Dad’s face was pale.
I kept reading.
The truth about my death was never hidden because of money.
It was hidden because the person responsible was someone we both loved.
My hands started shaking.
The final line was underlined.
And I knew exactly who it was.
I looked at Vanessa.
May you like
She was crying.
Because she knew.
