Chapter 3: The Truth Hidden in My Mother’s Words

Nobody slept that night.

The house that had always felt familiar suddenly felt like a place where everyone knew a secret except me.

My graduation was in the morning.

A day I had imagined for years.

A day filled with pictures, smiles, and my father telling me how proud he was.

Instead, I sat on my bedroom floor surrounded by torn fabric while my family stood around me like strangers.

Dad stayed near the window.

He had not taken his eyes off Vanessa.

“Mia,” he finally said.

She looked up.

“Go downstairs.””

“But—”

“Now.””

For once, she didn’t argue.

She left quietly.

The door closed.

Dad looked at Vanessa.

“I’m asking one more time.””

His voice was exhausted.

“What did you hide?””

Vanessa sat on the edge of my desk.

The confidence she usually carried was gone.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

Dad laughed softly.

“You had years.””

She covered her face.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“Fix what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And I hated that she looked sad.

Because sadness was easier to forgive than cruelty.

But I remembered her telling me to wear something else.

I remembered her protecting Mia.

I remembered how quickly she tried to take that envelope.

“What happened to my mother?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Your mother knew she was sick before anyone else did.””

I froze.

“I know she was sick.””

“No,” Vanessa whispered.

“She knew she didn’t have much time.””

Dad’s face changed.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Your first wife found out about something before she died.””

“What?””

She didn’t answer.

Dad stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

She wiped her eyes.

“Money.””

The word landed heavily.

“What money?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Your mother had an inheritance.””

Dad frowned.

“I knew about that.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You knew she had family money. You didn’t know what happened afterward.””

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked away.

“She created a trust.””

Dad stared.

“For Emily?””

Vanessa nodded.

I stopped breathing.

My mother had left something for me?

Something that someone had hidden?

Dad grabbed the letter again.

“Where is the trust?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That answer was louder than words.

Dad’s expression changed.

“Vanessa.””

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked down.

“I don’t know.””

The anger on Dad’s face was different now.

Not explosive.

Broken.

“You let me believe everything was handled.””

“I thought I was helping.””

“No.””

He pointed toward the destroyed dress.

“You thought you were controlling.””

Vanessa flinched.

I looked at her.

“All these years…”

My voice cracked.

“You knew my mother left me something?””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

The room spun.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“Because when I married your father, I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

She hesitated.

Then she said:

“That you would choose your mother’s family over us.””

I stared at her.

“So you hid my mother from me?””

“No, Emily—”

“You let me think she only left me memories.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“You took away something she wanted me to have.””

Vanessa didn’t defend herself.

And that hurt more.

Because maybe she knew there was no excuse.

Dad walked toward the door.

“Where are the documents?””

Vanessa looked up.

“What?””

“The trust documents.””

She hesitated.

Then slowly said:

“They’re not in the house.””

“Where are they?””

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

Toward Mia’s bedroom.

My heart sank.

“Why are you looking there?”” Dad asked.

Vanessa said nothing.

Dad walked out.

I followed.

We reached Mia’s room.

The door was slightly open.

Inside, Mia was standing beside her bed.

She looked terrified.

Dad pointed at a small locked box on her desk.

“What is that?””

Mia shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

But her voice was too fast.

Too nervous.

Dad walked closer.

“Mia.””

She started crying.

“I didn’t know what it was.””

I felt cold.

“What do you mean?””

She looked at me.

“I just did what Mom told me.””

The room went silent.

Dad’s face hardened.

“What did your mother tell you to do?””

Mia looked at Vanessa.

Then back at us.

And whispered:

“She told me to destroy anything Emily might find.””

My blood ran cold.

Dad stepped closer.

“Anything?””

Mia nodded slowly.

Then she pointed at the locked box.

“Because she said if Emily ever found those papers…”

She stopped.

Dad’s voice lowered.

“If she ever found what?””

Mia swallowed.

“She said Emily would take everything away from us.””

Dad opened the box.

Inside were old documents.

Photographs.

And one final envelope.

But this one wasn’t addressed to me.

It had Vanessa’s name written across the front.

And underneath it, in my mother’s handwriting, were five words that made Vanessa collapse into the chair.

*“I know what you did.””*
