Chapter 11: The Phone Call My Father Never Wanted Me to Hear
After Richard left, nobody talked for almost a minute.
It was strange.
The house had always been loud.
Mia’s music.
Vanessa’s phone calls.
The television downstairs.
The sound of normal life.
But that morning, everything felt frozen.
Dad stood near the door, staring at where Richard had disappeared.
Finally, he whispered:
“He’s lying.””
I looked at him.
“About what?””
He didn’t answer.
That scared me.
“Dad.””
He turned around.
His face looked exhausted.
“Your mother did stop trusting me.””
The words felt heavier than anything Richard had said.
I swallowed.
“Why?””
Dad sat down.
“When your mother got sick, I panicked.””
I listened.
“I thought I could fix everything. I thought I could handle the finances, the doctors, the house.””
He rubbed his hands together.
“But I made one mistake.””
“What?””
“I asked Vanessa to help.””
Nobody moved.
Dad looked at the floor.
“She was organized. She handled paperwork. Bills. Appointments.””
Vanessa looked away.
“And after a while, I stopped checking everything.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“That’s when she gained access.””
Dad looked at him.
“Yes.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You took advantage of him.””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
Dad looked at her.
“Why?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I was afraid.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
His voice broke.
“But nobody explains what they were afraid of.””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“When your mother died, I thought everything would fall apart.””
Dad stared.
“She was my wife.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
His voice rose.
“You don’t know what it was like losing her.””
Vanessa lowered her head.
“I knew she was going to expose me.””
The room went silent.
I felt cold.
“Expose you for what?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Dad stood.
“For what?””
She looked at him.
“The money.””
The confession came quietly.
But it destroyed everything.
“I took the money because I thought I could replace it.””
Dad stared.
“How?””
“I thought I could invest it.””
Thomas shook his head.
“You gambled with a child’s future.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I was going to put it back.””
I laughed sadly.
“You always say that.””
She flinched.
Because it was true.
Dad looked away.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
His expression changed.
He turned the speaker on.
A man’s voice came through.
“Daniel.””
Everyone froze.
Dad recognized it.
“Richard.””
The voice laughed.
“I see Thomas found his way back.””
Dad’s grip tightened around the phone.
“What do you want?””
Richard ignored the question.
“I wanted to remind you of something.””
“What?””
“Your daughter is going to receive a package today.””
My stomach tightened.
“What package?””
Richard continued.
“The truth.””
Dad looked at me.
“What are you talking about?””
“You always wondered why your wife stopped trusting you.””
A pause.
“Today you’ll find out.””
The call ended.
Dad immediately called back.
No answer.
Thomas looked worried.
“He’s playing with us.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because fear makes people make mistakes.””
I looked at the clock.
Graduation started in two hours.
Two hours ago, my biggest concern was walking across a stage.
Now I was waiting for a package that could change everything.
Then the doorbell rang.
Everyone froze.
Nobody moved.
Dad walked toward the door.
I followed.
On the front porch was a small box.
No name.
No address.
Only one word written on top.
Emily.
My hands shook.
Dad picked it up.
“Don’t open it here.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His eyes moved toward the street.
“Because someone wanted us to find it.””
Thomas looked outside.
A car was parked across the road.
Empty.
Watching.
Dad brought the box inside.
My heart was pounding.
We opened it together.
Inside was a flash drive.
And a handwritten note.
I picked it up.
The handwriting was familiar.
My mother’s.
Emily,
If you are seeing this, it means they failed to keep the truth away from you.
But before you watch what is inside…
Ask your father one question.
My hands started shaking.
At the bottom was one sentence.
The question my mother wanted me to ask.
“Dad…”
He looked at me.
“What?””
I held up the note.
May you like
The words felt impossible.
“Did you know my mother was murdered?””
