Chapter 7: The Man Who Knew My Mother’s Last Secret

The name felt unfamiliar.

But the way Dad said it told me everything.

Thomas.

Not with surprise.

Not with confusion.

With fear.

I had spent my entire life believing I knew every important person connected to my family.

My father.

My mother.

Vanessa.

Mia.

But suddenly there was a name hidden between the cracks of my childhood.

A person my mother knew.

A person my father clearly remembered.

And a person Vanessa looked like she wanted to disappear from.

Dad walked toward the stairs.

“Stay here,” he said.

I grabbed his arm.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Emily—”

“No.””

My voice shook, but I didn’t step back.

“I’m tired of everyone telling me to stay away from the truth.””

The words surprised him.

Maybe because they were true.

For years, everyone had made decisions about my life.

They protected me.

They controlled me.

They hid things from me.

But nobody asked what I wanted.

I wanted answers.

Dad looked at me for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

“Stay behind me.””

We walked downstairs together.

Vanessa followed slowly.

She looked like someone walking toward a storm.

At the bottom of the stairs stood a man I had never seen before.

He looked to be in his late fifties.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

A worn jacket.

He didn’t look dangerous.

That almost made it worse.

Because dangerous people were easier to hate.

This man looked like someone carrying years of regret.

His eyes moved from Dad to me.

Then he stopped.

“Emily.””

Hearing my name from a stranger made my skin crawl.

Dad stepped forward.

“How do you know my daughter?””

The man swallowed.

“Because I knew her mother.””

Nobody spoke.

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“Thomas, you need to leave.””

The man shook his head.

“No.””

His eyes moved toward me.

“Not this time.””

Vanessa whispered:

“You shouldn’t have come here.””

Thomas looked at her.

“You should have told the truth years ago.””

The anger in his voice surprised me.

Dad noticed.

“What truth?””

Thomas looked at me.

Then at the stairs.

“Can we sit?””

“No,” Dad said.

“You’re going to explain why you walked into my house after all these years.””

Thomas nodded.

“I expected that.””

He reached into his jacket.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“What are you doing?””

Thomas pulled out a small folder.

“I brought proof.””

Dad took it.

He opened the folder.

Inside were hospital records.

The same records from the mysterious text message.

My heart started beating faster.

“How did you get those?”” Dad asked.

Thomas looked at him.

“Your wife asked me to help.””

Everyone turned toward Vanessa.

She froze.

“What?””

Dad’s voice became dangerous.

“You knew him?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I…”

Thomas interrupted.

“She knew me before she knew you.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What does that mean?””

She closed her eyes.

“Emily…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I want the truth.””

Thomas looked at me sadly.

“Your mother and I were friends.””

Dad laughed bitterly.

“Friends?””

Thomas didn’t react.

“We worked together before she met you.””

Dad stared.

“You never mentioned him.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Because I didn’t want him involved.””

Thomas looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“You didn’t want him exposing you.””

My heart stopped.

Dad opened the folder.

“What are these?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Records from the hospital where your wife was treated.””

Dad read.

Then his face changed.

“What am I looking at?””

Thomas pointed.

“Three medication changes.””

Dad frowned.

“So?””

“The changes were made without your wife’s doctor’s approval.””

The room went cold.

I covered my mouth.

Dad looked at Vanessa.

“Who made those requests?””

Nobody answered.

Thomas did.

“Someone with access to the family account.””

Dad’s face went pale.

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Thomas looked at her.

“You know I’m right.””

Dad stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

She looked terrified.

“I didn’t hurt her.””

Nobody accused her directly.

But she defended herself anyway.

And everyone noticed.

Dad whispered:

“What did you do?””

Vanessa started crying.

“I didn’t know what would happen.””

My stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas looked at me.

“That means your stepmother knew something was wrong.””

Dad stared.

“You knew?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I thought it was just about the money.””

The words fell like a bomb.

Dad froze.

“The money?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Now you understand.””

I looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Thomas stepped closer.

“Emily, your mother discovered someone was stealing from your trust.””

I already knew that.

But then he continued.

“She also discovered someone was trying to make sure she couldn’t tell anyone.””

My breathing stopped.

Dad looked at Thomas.

“Who?””

Thomas didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he handed me another piece of paper.

“This was found in your mother’s personal files.””

I took it.

At the bottom was her handwriting.

One sentence.

Only one.

But it changed everything.

I know who is behind this.

And beneath it was a name.

A name I had never expected.

May you like

My father’s name.

Daniel Carter.
