Chapter 6: The Secret Vanessa Buried for Years
The accusation hung in the air.
Nobody spoke.
Dad stared at the forged signature.
Vanessa stared back.
For a moment, I thought she would finally admit everything.
But Vanessa had spent years building walls.
People like that don’t tear them down easily.
“I didn’t forge anything,” she said.
Dad looked up.
“Then explain.””
“I can’t.””
The answer was immediate.
Too immediate.
Dad stood.
“No.””
He picked up the folder.
“You don’t get to say that anymore.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
And that made my stomach tighten.
“Of losing everything.””
I stepped back.
“You mean losing the money.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Not just the money.””
Dad frowned.
“What else?””
Vanessa sat down.
Her voice became smaller.
“When your mother died, I was already married to you.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
She looked at me.
“You don’t know what she found out before she died.””
The room became quiet.
Dad crossed his arms.
“Tell us.””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“Your mother knew she wasn’t just sick.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
“She thought someone was trying to make her worse.””
Dad’s expression changed.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“She believed someone had been interfering with her medication.””
The room went silent.
My first instinct was disbelief.
Then fear.
Because my mother’s letter suddenly felt different.
She hadn’t just been afraid of losing money.
She had been afraid of someone.
Dad’s voice was barely a whisper.
“Are you saying my wife was poisoned?””
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
“No.””
Relief came for half a second.
Then disappeared.
“I’m saying she suspected it.””
“Who did she suspect?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Dad stepped forward.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And I hated that she did.
Because the question that came next changed everything.
“She thought the person closest to her was hiding something.””
My skin went cold.
“Who?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“She never told me the name.””
Dad stared.
“You expect us to believe that?””
“I’m telling the truth.””
I looked at the papers.
The hidden money.
The stolen trust.
The forged signature.
Too many secrets.
Too many lies.
Then my phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
A message appeared on the screen.
Unknown number.
My heart raced.
I opened it.
Emily, don’t trust Vanessa.
The room went silent.
Another message appeared.
I have proof of what happened to your mother.
My hands shook.
Dad saw my face.
“What is it?””
I showed him.
He read the messages.
Vanessa stood up immediately.
“Who sent that?””
I looked at her.
“I don’t know.””
Dad took my phone.
The number was hidden.
No name.
No profile.
Nothing.
Then another message arrived.
This one only had four words.
Check the hospital records.
Dad looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
Not confused.
Terrified.
And that told me something.
She knew exactly what those records meant.
Dad noticed too.
“Vanessa.””
She didn’t move.
“Why are you afraid of hospital records?””
She whispered:
“Because your daughter isn’t the only person your mother left a secret for.””
My heart stopped.
Dad stepped closer.
“What secret?””
Vanessa looked at the phone.
Then at me.
And quietly said:
“Your mother found out who your father’s family really was.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with fear.
“It means…”
She stopped.
The front door downstairs suddenly slammed.
Everyone froze.
Someone had entered the house.
Dad looked toward the hallway.
“Who is that?””
A man’s voice answered from downstairs.
“Daniel?””
Dad went pale.
Because he recognized the voice.
And so did Vanessa.
The stranger called again.
“I think it’s time Emily knows the truth about her mother.””
May you like
And then Dad whispered the name I had never heard before.
“Thomas.””
