Chapter 12: The Video My Mother Left Behind
Nobody spoke after I asked the question.
Not even Dad.
The silence was the answer before he gave one.
I watched his face.
I waited for anger.
For denial.
For him to tell me I was wrong.
But he didn’t.
He just looked broken.
“Emily…”
My voice shook.
“Did you know?””
Dad sat down slowly.
“No.””
I wanted to believe him.
I did.
But there was something in his expression.
Something missing.
“Then why didn’t you look surprised?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
He looked at the flash drive.
“Afraid that I ignored signs.””
That hurt more than anything.
Because guilt looked different from lying.
And my father looked guilty.
Not because he had hurt her.
Because he hadn’t protected her.
Thomas picked up the flash drive.
“We need to watch this.””
Nobody argued.
Dad connected it to his laptop.
The screen loaded.
A video appeared.
The date was three days before my mother died.
My breath stopped.
There she was.
My mother.
Older than the photographs I remembered.
Tired.
Pale.
But alive.
I covered my mouth.
I hadn’t heard her voice in years.
“Emily,” she said in the video.
My heart broke.
“She’s talking to me.””
Dad sat beside me.
The video continued.
“If you’re watching this, I’m sorry.””
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“I wanted to tell you myself.””
She took a breath.
“I don’t have much time.””
Tears filled my eyes.
Then she said something I never expected.
“I need you to know that your father is not the person you should fear.””
Everyone looked at Dad.
He closed his eyes.
My mother continued.
“Daniel made mistakes. He trusted people he shouldn’t have.””
A pause.
“But he loves you.””
Dad started crying silently.
I reached for his hand.
The video continued.
“The person I’m worried about is someone who has been pretending to help us.””
My heart raced.
My mother looked toward the camera.
“Vanessa.””
The room went still.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“No…”
My mother continued.
“She has been moving money from Emily’s trust.””
Dad looked at Vanessa.
But my mother wasn’t finished.
“She has also been receiving information from my brother Richard.””
Thomas’s face hardened.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You worked with him.””
She started crying.
“I didn’t know what he was planning.””
The video continued.
“I confronted Vanessa.””
My mother’s voice became quieter.
“She begged me not to tell Daniel.””
Dad looked devastated.
My mother took another breath.
“But the money wasn’t the only thing I discovered.””
Everyone leaned closer.
“She changed my medication.””
The room froze.
Vanessa shook her head violently.
“No.””
The video continued.
“I don’t know if she understands what she has done.””
My mother looked scared.
“But I know someone is trying to make me disappear.””
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
Dad whispered:
“Oh my God.””
Then my mother said the words that changed everything.
“If anything happens to me, Daniel needs to know the truth.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“Vanessa did not act alone.””
The video paused.
Buffering.
Everyone stared.
Then the screen changed.
A new recording started.
This one was different.
My mother wasn’t alone.
Someone was sitting across from her.
A man.
I couldn’t see his face.
But I recognized the voice.
Richard.
“You don’t understand what you’re risking.””
My mother answered:
“I understand exactly.””
Richard leaned closer.
“You’ll lose everything.””
My mother smiled sadly.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“You will.””
The video froze.
Then one final line appeared on the screen.
Recorded after my mother’s death.
The file name was:
*THE PERSON WHO HELPED HER.*
Dad clicked it.
The video opened.
And the first thing we saw was a face.
A face none of us expected.
Vanessa whispered:
“No…”
Because the person sitting beside my mother wasn’t Thomas.
It wasn’t Richard.
May you like
It wasn’t Dad.
It was Mia.
