Chapter 9: The File That Changed Everything

The investigators entered the house quietly.

But the silence they brought with them felt heavier than shouting.

Vanessa stood in the center of the living room, holding her phone like it was the only thing keeping her upright.

“What did you receive?”” my father asked.

She didn’t answer.

The investigator extended his hand.

“Mrs. Parker, please hand over your phone.””

For once, Vanessa didn’t argue.

She gave it to him.

He looked at the screen.

Then his expression changed.

“Where did you get this?””

Vanessa laughed weakly.

“You already know.””

The investigator looked at my father.

“Mr. Carter, we need everyone to stay here.””

My father nodded.

I felt a knot forming in my stomach.

“What’s happening?””

The investigator looked at me.

“Emily, there are some things you need to know.””

I hated those words.

Everyone kept saying them.

Every secret began with those words.

My mother reached for my hand.

This time, I didn’t pull away.

Not because everything was forgiven.

It wasn’t.

But because I needed to know the truth.

The investigator opened the file.

“We reopened your mother’s case after new evidence was submitted.””

My father looked at my mother.

“You had more evidence?””

She nodded.

“I found the last piece.””

“What piece?””

She looked at Vanessa.

“The original police report.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

The investigator continued.

“The report from the night of the accident was altered.””

My father stared.

“Altered?””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“You didn’t know?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

The investigator placed a document on the table.

“Someone removed statements from witnesses.””

My mother looked at me.

“One witness saw Vanessa near the vehicle before the crash.””

My heart raced.

“But why wasn’t that reported?””

The investigator looked at Vanessa.

“Because the witness was paid to stay silent.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa looked furious.

“Prove it.””

The investigator calmly pulled out another document.

“We have the bank records.””

Vanessa’s confidence disappeared.

My father whispered:

“You paid someone.””

She looked at him.

“I was protecting myself.””

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Nobody moved.

I watched the realization hit her face.

She had just admitted it.

My mother closed her eyes.

Fifteen years of pain.

Fifteen years of pretending.

And now the truth was finally standing in front of us.

Madison started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

She wiped her face.

“For helping her.””

“You didn’t know everything.””

“But I knew enough.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I wasn’t ready to forgive anyone.

Not yet.

The investigator turned to Vanessa.

“You’ll need to come with us.””

Vanessa looked around the room.

At my father.

At Madison.

At me.

Then she smiled.

“You all think this is finished?””

Nobody responded.

She looked directly at me.

“Emily, ask your mother why she never came back.””

My mother’s face changed.

I noticed.

And Vanessa noticed too.

“There it is.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to her.””

But I looked at my mother.

“Why didn’t you come back?””

My mother looked away.

The investigator waited.

Everyone waited.

Finally, she whispered:

“Because I was protecting you.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“From what?””

She reached into her bag.

She pulled out another photograph.

Not of the accident.

Not of Vanessa.

This one showed a man standing outside our house years ago.

A man I had never seen.

My mother’s voice shook.

“Vanessa wasn’t working alone.””

The room went silent.

My father stared at the picture.

Then his face changed.

Because he recognized the man.

“Who is that?””

My mother looked at him.

“The person who ordered me to disappear.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Who?””

My mother slowly answered.

And the name she said made my father take a step back.

“Your grandfather’s business partner.””

Then she added:

“And he’s the reason your mother’s inheritance was never really stolen.””

A chill ran through me.

“Then what happened to it?””

My mother looked at me.

“It was transferred.””

“To who?””

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Because my father was already staring at the document in the investigator’s hand.

May you like

And written at the bottom was a name.

Mine.
