Chapter 13: Madison’s Last Secret
For a moment, nobody reacted.
The words were too impossible.
Too heavy.
Too painful.
“I was the one who moved the car.””
Madison’s voice barely existed.
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
She covered her face with both hands.
“I didn’t know.””
My father stood up.
“Madison.””
She flinched.
“I didn’t know what Mom was planning.””
My mother looked at her carefully.
“Tell us everything.””
Madison looked toward the window.
The rain outside had slowed, but the storm inside the house was only beginning.
“I was twelve,” she whispered.
“I already know that part,” I said.
She nodded.
“But you don’t know what happened after I saw Vanessa arguing with your mom.””
Nobody interrupted.
“She told me to get the car.””
My father’s expression changed.
“Why?””
“Because she said your mom was leaving.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“She told you I was leaving?””
Madison nodded.
“She said you were angry and that you were going to take Emily away.””
My chest tightened.
“So you moved the car?””
Madison cried.
“She told me to move it out of the driveway.””
My father stepped closer.
“And then?””
Madison wiped her tears.
“I moved it.””
Her voice cracked.
“Then Mom got inside.””
The room went silent.
“You were the driver?””
“No.””
Madison shook her head quickly.
“No. I swear.””
My mother looked at her.
“Then what happened?””
Madison looked down.
“I heard Vanessa arguing with you.””
Everyone froze.
“She said something about brakes.””
My father’s face turned pale.
“What?””
Madison nodded.
“I didn’t understand what she meant.””
My hands went cold.
“What did she say?””
Madison closed her eyes.
“She said, ‘You should have listened when I warned you.’”
My mother took a step back.
She remembered.
I could see it.
Every missing piece coming together.
“The car…”
My mother whispered.
“She knew.””
The investigator immediately stood.
“We need to locate Vanessa.””
My father looked toward the door.
“She’s gone.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
My father checked his phone.
“I thought she was being questioned.””
The investigator grabbed his radio.
“She left before the official arrest process.””
My stomach dropped.
“She escaped?””
The investigator nodded.
Madison suddenly looked terrified.
“She has the original papers.””
Everyone turned.
“What papers?”” I asked.
“The ones she wanted.””
My father looked at me.
“The trust documents.””
I felt a chill.
“She wants them because…”
The investigator answered:
“Because if she destroys the originals, she may be able to delay the ownership transfer.””
My mother looked toward the door.
“She’s going after the house.””
“No,” I whispered.
“She’s going after everything.””
My phone buzzed.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
A message.
*Emily, come to the old Parker warehouse if you want to know why your mother really survived. Come alone.*
Attached was a photograph.
Vanessa standing inside an abandoned building.
Holding a folder.
My father immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“I have to go.””
“Absolutely not.””
“She knows something.””
My mother grabbed my hand.
“She’s trying to trap you.””
I looked at the photograph.
“She already took fifteen years from me.””
My voice became steady.
“I’m not letting her take the truth too.””
The investigator stepped forward.
“You’re not going alone.””
I nodded.
But Vanessa didn’t know that.
And maybe that was the only advantage we had.
An hour later, we arrived at the old warehouse.
The place was abandoned.
Broken windows.
Dust-covered floors.
A place where secrets could disappear forever.
I walked inside.
“Vanessa?””
My voice echoed.
Then a light turned on.
She stood at the other end of the room.
Holding the folder.
“You came.””
I stared at her.
“Why did you do it?””
She smiled sadly.
“Still asking the wrong question.””
“What’s the right one?””
She opened the folder.
“Ask why your mother was worth killing.””
My heart stopped.
Then she pulled out one final document.
May you like
And I saw a signature at the bottom.
My mother’s.
