Chapter 4: The Evidence Hidden in the Dark

I couldn’t move.

Vanessa’s words hung in the air like smoke.

“The person who caused your mother’s death was never investigated because your father made sure the police never found the evidence.””

I looked at Dad.

Waiting.

Begging.

For him to say something.

Anything.

But he just stood there, staring at the floor.

And that silence hurt more than a confession.

“Dad?””

His eyes lifted slowly.

“Emily…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

The man who had comforted me through every nightmare suddenly looked like he was trapped inside one himself.

Clara stepped closer.

“Let him explain.””

I looked at her.

“You knew about this?””

She shook her head.

“Not everything.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Of course she doesn’t know everything. Nobody knows everything except me.””

Dad turned toward her.

“You’re not going to twist this.””

“Am I?””

Vanessa walked toward the kitchen counter.

“You spent fifteen years pretending you were protecting Emily.””

Her eyes landed on me.

“But you never told her the truth.””

My hands tightened around my mother’s picture.

“What truth?””

Dad closed his eyes.

“I found your mother after the accident.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

“I was the first person there.””

The room became silent.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His voice was barely audible.

“Because I saw something.””

I waited.

“What did you see?””

Dad looked at Clara.

Then back at me.

“Your mother’s car wasn’t just damaged from the crash.””

I felt cold.

“What does that mean?””

“It means there were signs someone had tampered with it.””

My breath caught.

Vanessa immediately spoke.

“And he covered it up.””

Dad turned sharply.

“I didn’t.””

“You did.””

“No, I protected my daughter.””

“By destroying evidence?””

I looked between them.

“What evidence?””

Dad rubbed his face.

“I found documents in the car.””

“What documents?””

“Your mother’s notes about the missing inheritance.””

My mind raced.

“She knew who was stealing from her.””

“Yes.””

“And you found proof?””

He nodded.

“But when I went back to retrieve it…”

He stopped.

“Someone had already taken it.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Clara quietly said:

“Vanessa.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You have no proof.””

Clara reached into her bag.

“I have enough.””

She placed several photographs on the table.

My father picked them up.

His hands started shaking.

“What are these?””

“Copies from the storage records,” Clara said.

I stepped closer.

The pictures showed boxes.

Old files.

A handwritten label.

*E. Parker — Personal Documents.*

My mother’s name.

I felt dizzy.

Vanessa looked toward the door.

Dad noticed.

“You knew about the storage unit.””

She didn’t answer.

“You knew we would find it.””

Still nothing.

Then she smiled.

A small, terrifying smile.

“You’re too late.””

My father froze.

“What?””

Vanessa grabbed her coat.

“The past is already gone.””

She rushed toward the door.

Dad moved faster.

He blocked her.

“You’re not leaving.””

For a second, they stared at each other.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You really want Emily to know what happened after the accident?””

My father’s expression changed.

“What are you talking about?””

She leaned closer.

“Ask him where he was the night after your mother died.””

I looked at Dad.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa smiled.

“You’ll find out.””

The police sirens suddenly echoed outside.

Everyone turned.

My father looked confused.

“I didn’t call them.””

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

I opened the message.

*Emily, don’t trust your father. The person who killed your mother is closer than you think.*

Attached was a photograph.

My mother’s car.

Taken the night of the accident.

But there was something in the corner of the picture.

A person standing beside the vehicle.

I zoomed in.

My hands went numb.

May you like

Because I recognized the jacket.

It belonged to my father.
