Chapter 3: The Secret My Father Buried

My father had always been the strongest person I knew.

When my mother died, he was the one who held everything together.

He packed my lunches.

He learned how to braid my hair.

He sat beside my bed during thunderstorms because he knew I was afraid of the dark.

So seeing him unable to speak scared me more than anything Vanessa could say.

“What happened that night?”” I asked.

Nobody moved.

The rain tapped against the windows.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Tell her.””

Dad looked at her.

“Not like this.””

“Why not?”” Vanessa replied.

“She deserves the truth.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Dad?””

He closed his eyes.

Then he sat down at the kitchen table.

“I should have told you years ago.””

I followed him.

Clara stood quietly nearby.

“What happened?””

My father looked at my mother’s picture in my hands.

“The night your mother died, she wasn’t just driving home.””

I waited.

“She was going to meet someone.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

He looked at Clara.

“Your mother discovered money was missing.””

The room became painfully quiet.

“What money?””

“The inheritance your grandfather left her.””

I looked toward Vanessa.

She looked away.

Dad continued.

“Your mother had proof someone had been moving money from her accounts.””

My voice became a whisper.

“Who?””

My father didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation hurt more than the words.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“I suspected Vanessa.””

The air left my lungs.

I stared at him.

“You suspected her?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you marry her?””

His face fell.

“Because I was wrong about something.””

“What?””

“I thought I could protect you by keeping the past buried.””

I shook my head.

“You protected her.””

“No.””

“You let her live here.””

“I thought she changed.””

Vanessa laughed from across the room.

“Your father always wanted to believe people were better than they were.””

Dad stood.

“You manipulated me.””

She smiled.

“And you loved being manipulated.””

Madison suddenly spoke.

“Mom, stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked terrified.

“I didn’t know she did all this.””

Vanessa turned.

“You need to be quiet.””

“No.””

Madison shook her head.

“I’m tired.””

For the first time, I saw fear on Vanessa’s face.

“What are you talking about?””

Madison swallowed.

“She kept the letters.””

My father froze.

“What letters?””

Madison looked at me.

“The ones from your mom.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“My mom wrote letters?””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Madison!””

But it was too late.

I heard every word.

“After the accident, Mom found them before Dad did.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“You had my mother’s letters?””

She didn’t answer.

Dad’s voice became cold.

“Where are they?””

Vanessa backed away.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Clara quietly opened her phone.

“I think I do.””

She showed us a picture.

A storage unit.

A number written on the door.

My father looked at it.

Then his face changed.

“That’s the unit Vanessa rented the week after your mother died.””

I felt numb.

My mother’s letters.

The missing inheritance.

The truth about the accident.

All of it had been sitting somewhere, hidden.

Waiting.

My father grabbed his keys.

“We’re going there now.””

But before we reached the door, Vanessa’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her expression changed.

She answered silently.

Then her eyes moved to me.

“Emily.””

Everyone stopped.

She lowered the phone.

“There’s something you don’t know.””

I felt a chill.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at my father.

Then at me.

“The person who caused your mother’s death…”

She paused.

And the next words made my father drop his keys.

“…was never investigated because your father made sure the police never found the evidence.””

I looked at my father.

He didn’t move.

May you like

He didn’t speak.

And for the first time in my life, I wondered if the person I trusted most had been hiding the truth from me all along.
