Chapter 11: The Signature That Destroyed My Family

I couldn’t look away from my father.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who stayed awake when I was sick.

The man who promised he would always protect me.

Now he stood in front of me with another secret between us.

“Dad.””

His face was full of pain.

“Emily, listen to me.””

“Did you sign something?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

My mother looked at him.

“David.””

Her voice was quiet.

But there was disappointment in it.

“I thought we agreed you would tell her.””

My father closed his eyes.

“I was going to.””

“When?””

He didn’t answer.

Richard smiled.

“I knew this would happen.””

The investigator stepped forward.

“Mr. Hale, you need to leave.””

Richard looked at him.

“Not until Emily knows the truth.””

My father’s hands tightened.

“Get out.””

Richard laughed.

“You still think you’re in control.””

The investigator moved toward him.

But before Richard left, he looked at me.

“Ask your father about the company transfer.””

Then he walked away.

The door closed.

And suddenly, the house felt much smaller.

I turned toward my father.

“What did you sign?””

He sat down.

“I signed a temporary management agreement.””

My voice shook.

“For my inheritance?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked at my mother.

“Because she asked me to.””

I froze.

My mother nodded slowly.

“I did.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She sat across from me.

“Because I knew someone was trying to steal everything.””

My father continued.

“I thought if I moved control temporarily, I could protect the assets.””

“But you moved them to who?””

He looked down.

“Richard.””

My stomach dropped.

“You gave him control?””

“Temporary control.””

“But he used it.””

“Yes.””

My mother’s voice became bitter.

“He manipulated the documents.””

I stared.

“So everyone betrayed me.””

“No,” my father said immediately.

But I raised my hand.

“Let me finish.””

Nobody spoke.

“I spent fifteen years believing Vanessa was the only person who hurt me.””

My voice cracked.

“But my own father signed away something that belonged to me.””

Tears filled his eyes.

“I was trying to save it.””

“You failed.””

The words hurt me as soon as I said them.

But they were true.

My father looked away.

“I know.””

My mother reached for my hand.

“I blamed him too.””

I looked at her.

“You blamed him?””

“Yes.””

“Then why come back now?””

She looked at me.

“Because I finally had proof.””

The investigator placed a new file on the table.

“We found something else.””

I opened it.

Inside was a copy of an old letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

“What is this?””

She whispered:

“The letter I wrote the night I disappeared.””

I unfolded it.

The paper was old.

The ink faded.

But the words were clear.

*David, if you’re reading this, it means I couldn’t come back. Protect Emily. Don’t let Richard take what belongs to her.*

I looked up.

“She knew.””

My father nodded.

“She knew he was dangerous.””

I kept reading.

The final sentence made my hands shake.

*And if Vanessa tells Emily I abandoned her, she is lying. I never stopped loving my daughter.*

I covered my mouth.

For years, I had wondered if my mother chose to leave.

She didn’t.

She had been fighting to come home.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

*You found the truth about Vanessa. Good. But you still don’t know what happened after your mother disappeared.*

Another message appeared.

A photograph.

It showed Richard leaving a hospital.

With my father.

The date was two days after my mother supposedly died.

My heart stopped.

May you like

Because in the background of the photograph…

was Vanessa.
