Chapter 8: Madison’s Confession

Nobody spoke.

Madison stood in the middle of the room, looking smaller than I had ever seen her.

The confident girl who had laughed while holding my mother’s picture was gone.

Now she looked like a child who had been carrying a secret for too long.

Vanessa’s voice became sharp.

“Madison.””

My stepsister flinched.

“Don’t.””

“Don’t what?””

“Don’t tell them.””

I stared at her.

“You know what happened?””

Madison looked at me.

“I knew something.””

My father stepped closer.

“What did you see?””

She swallowed.

“I was twelve.””

The room went quiet.

“I woke up because Mom was arguing with someone.””

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

“Stop.””

Madison continued.

“I went downstairs.””

My mother looked at her carefully.

“And?””

“I saw you.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Madison.””

“I saw you yelling at Emily’s mom.””

My breath stopped.

My mother closed her eyes.

“What was she saying?””

Madison looked at Vanessa.

“She said she was going to tell Dad everything.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“Everything about what?””

Madison shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You were a child. You don’t remember correctly.””

“Yes, I do.””

Madison’s voice became stronger.

“You told her nobody would believe her.””

Nobody moved.

Then Madison continued.

“She had a folder.””

My mother’s eyes widened.

“The folder.””

“What folder?”” I asked.

“The one with the bank records.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Madison looked down.

“Mom grabbed it.””

My father stared.

“Then what happened?””

Madison hesitated.

“She followed your mom outside.””

The room went cold.

My mother whispered:

“And then?””

Madison’s eyes filled with tears.

“I heard a crash.””

I covered my mouth.

“No.””

“I ran outside.””

Madison looked at Vanessa.

“You were standing beside the car.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“You told me to go back inside.””

“You’re lying.””

“You told me if I said anything, Dad would hate me.””

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“You ungrateful little—”

“Enough!””

My father’s voice thundered through the house.

Everyone froze.

For the first time, Vanessa looked afraid of him.

My mother walked toward Madison.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Madison started crying.

“Because she said you were dead.””

She looked at me.

“And because I thought nobody would believe me.””

I didn’t know what to feel.

Anger.

Pain.

Betrayal.

All of it mixed together.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew my mother survived.””

She said nothing.

“You knew.””

Her silence was enough.

Dad moved toward her.

“Where is the evidence?””

Vanessa laughed.

“You think I kept everything?””

My mother stepped forward.

“I know you did.””

Vanessa’s smile faded.

“How?””

“Because you always underestimated me.””

My mother pulled out her phone.

She pressed a button.

A recording started playing.

Vanessa’s own voice filled the room.

“I had to get rid of the problem before she exposed me.””

Everyone froze.

The recording continued.

“I should have finished it that night.””

Vanessa grabbed the phone.

“No!””

Dad pulled it away.

“What is this?””

My mother looked at him.

“A confession.””

Vanessa’s face turned desperate.

“You set me up.””

“No.””

My mother looked at her.

“You did that yourself.””

Suddenly, headlights flashed through the front windows.

A car had stopped outside.

Then another.

My father looked toward the door.

“What’s happening?””

My mother took a deep breath.

“I called someone before I came here.””

The doorbell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Then a man’s voice came from outside.

“Vanessa Parker?””

Vanessa stopped breathing.

My father opened the door.

Two investigators stood there.

One of them held a file.

“We need to ask you some questions about the death of Eleanor Parker.””

Vanessa backed away.

But before they could step inside, her phone buzzed.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

She whispered:

“No…”

I looked at her.

“What is it?””

May you like

She slowly raised her eyes.

“It’s over.””
