Chapter 10: The Inheritance Nobody Could Touch

My name was written at the bottom of the document.

Not my father’s.

Not Vanessa’s.

Mine.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

I stared at the paper sitting on the table, trying to understand how a simple signature could hold fifteen years of lies.

“Emily…”

My father’s voice sounded distant.

I looked at him.

“What is that?””

He swallowed.

“Your inheritance papers.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

“No, that doesn’t make sense.””

My mother stepped closer.

“It was always meant to belong to you.””

I looked at her.

“Then why did nobody tell me?””

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“Because telling you would have put you in danger.””

I laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because it hurt.

“I was eight years old when you disappeared.””

My mother lowered her eyes.

“I know.””

“I grew up thinking I had lost everything.””

“You didn’t.””

I looked around the house.

“The only thing I had left was this place.””

My mother looked at the walls.

“This house was never just a house.””

My father nodded.

“Your grandfather built the trust so nobody could sell it, borrow against it, or transfer ownership.””

The investigator pointed to the document.

“According to these records, Emily became the legal beneficiary the moment she turned eighteen.””

I stared.

“But I never signed anything.””

“You didn’t need to,” he said.

“Your grandfather planned for that.””

My mother touched the paper.

“The problem was that someone tried to control the trust before you reached adulthood.””

I looked at Vanessa’s empty chair.

“Vanessa.””

The investigator nodded.

“She created false documents claiming she was managing the estate on behalf of the family.””

My father looked sick.

“She lied to me.””

“She lied to everyone,” my mother said.

I sat down slowly.

All these years.

Every time Vanessa told me I was lucky to live in her house.

Every time she reminded me that she paid the bills.

Every time she acted like I owed her.

She had been standing on something that was never hers.

A knock interrupted the silence.

Everyone turned.

One of the investigators opened the door.

A man stood outside.

Older.

Gray hair.

Expensive suit.

He looked completely calm.

Too calm.

My father immediately stood.

“Richard.””

My mother’s face hardened.

“You came.””

The man smiled.

“I heard there was a misunderstanding.””

The investigator stepped forward.

“Mr. Richard Hale, you need to leave.””

Richard ignored him.

He looked directly at me.

“Emily.””

I felt uncomfortable hearing my name from someone I didn’t know.

“You’ve grown.””

I stepped back.

“How do you know me?””

He smiled.

“Your grandfather talked about you often.””

My father’s expression changed.

“You stay away from her.””

Richard laughed softly.

“Still protective after all these years.””

My mother moved between us.

“You ruined everything.””

Richard looked amused.

“No. I corrected a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

He looked at me.

“Your grandfather should have left the company to someone capable.””

My stomach tightened.

“My inheritance.””

“Exactly.””

He took a step forward.

“You’re a young woman with no experience. You don’t understand what you own.””

I stared at him.

“I understand enough.””

His smile faded slightly.

“Do you?””

He reached into his coat.

He pulled out a folder.

“I came here to offer you a solution.””

The investigator immediately stopped him.

“Don’t hand her anything.””

Richard ignored him.

“You can avoid years of legal battles.””

My father stepped forward.

“Emily, don’t touch it.””

Richard looked at him.

“You already failed her once.””

The words hit hard.

My father froze.

Richard smiled.

“She deserves the truth about what happened the night your wife disappeared.””

My mother’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard looked at her.

“You never told her, did you?””

The room became silent.

My mother whispered:

“Told her what?””

Richard looked at me.

“Your mother didn’t disappear because of Vanessa.””

I felt my heart stop.

“What?””

He smiled.

“She disappeared because she discovered your father was the one who signed the transfer documents.””

I looked at Dad.

My father went completely still.

“Is that true?””

May you like

Nobody answered.

And that silence was worse than anything.
