Chapter 9: The Night Everything Changed

I ran out of the storage unit.

Not because I was afraid of Vanessa.

Because I was afraid of what she would do next.

My father followed me.

“Emily, wait.””

I turned around.

“Did you tell her where I was?””

His face broke.

“No.””

“Then how did she know?””

“I don’t know.””

That was the problem.

Nobody knew anything.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had excuses.

And somehow, I was always the last person to find out.

I drove straight to Claire’s house.

She opened the door before I knocked.

“You found something.””

It wasn’t a question.

I handed her the folder.

Her expression changed as she read through it.

“She did it.””

“Vanessa?””

Claire nodded.

“She was using your father.””

I looked at the papers.

“But my father helped her.””

Claire didn’t argue.

“Yes.””

That hurt more than I expected.

Because a part of me still wanted him to be innocent.

Even after everything.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man spoke.

“Emily Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Robert Hayes.””

The name sounded familiar.

“I don’t know you.””

“You do.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“I worked with your mother.””

I looked at Claire.

She immediately became serious.

“How did you get this number?””

Robert ignored the question.

“Your mother left something with me.””

My heart started racing.

“What?””

“A second recording.””

I froze.

“What second recording?””

“One she made after she discovered your father’s mistake.””

I looked at Claire.

“Where are you?””

Robert hesitated.

Then gave me an address.

Before I could respond, the call ended.

Claire grabbed her coat.

“We’re going.””

The address led us to an abandoned office building downtown.

The kind of place people forgot existed.

Robert was waiting inside.

Older.

Tired.

Afraid.

The moment he saw Claire, he relaxed slightly.

“You came.””

Claire nodded.

“You kept it?””

Robert reached into his jacket.

“I kept my promise.””

He handed me a small recorder.

My fingers tightened around it.

“Why didn’t you give this to me before?””

Robert looked at me sadly.

“Because your mother told me not to.””

I pressed the button.

Static.

Then my mother’s voice.

“Emily.””

I covered my mouth.

“If you’re hearing this, then things have gone worse than I expected.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I need you to know that your father is not the person you should blame first.””

I looked at Claire.

The recording continued.

“Your father made mistakes. He was weak. He was scared.””

A pause.

“But Vanessa knew exactly what she was doing.””

My breathing slowed.

“She entered our family because she knew about the trust.””

The room felt smaller.

“She studied us. She learned our weaknesses.””

My mother’s voice shook.

“Emily, I’m sorry you have to learn this way.””

I closed my eyes.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“Vanessa did not meet your father after I became sick.””

Silence.

“She met him before.””

My eyes opened.

“What?””

Claire looked shocked.

The recording continued.

“They were already planning a future together while I was still alive.””

I felt like the floor disappeared.

My father’s betrayal suddenly became something much darker.

My mother kept speaking.

“And there is one more thing you need to know.””

The recording crackled.

“If Vanessa ever finds the key, she will look for the account number hidden with it.””

Account number.

I looked at the folder.

The key.

The documents.

Everything.

Then my mother said:

“Because the account contains proof of who really owns the company.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Then Robert whispered:

“Emily…”

I looked at him.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

He pulled out another document.

A transfer record.

Dated three days after my mother died.

My blood ran cold.

The signature at the bottom belonged to my father.

And the recipient was Vanessa.

But the amount wasn’t money.

It was ownership.

Robert looked at me.

“Your father didn’t just help her steal from your mother.””

He swallowed.

“He gave her control of everything your mother built.””

My phone buzzed.

A final message appeared.

From Vanessa.

*You’re getting closer.*

May you like

Then another.

*But you still don’t know what your mother hid from you.*
