Chapter 2: The Stranger With My Mother’s Secret

I barely slept that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw that picture.

My mother’s car.

A warehouse.

And those words repeating in my mind.

Your stepmother knows what’s inside.

By sunrise, I was already downstairs.

Vanessa was making breakfast like nothing had happened.

The sound of eggs sizzling filled the kitchen.

The normality of it made me angry.

How could she stand there calmly after taking something so important from me?

She looked up.

“You’re awake early.””

I placed my phone on the counter.

“Who bought my car?””

The smile disappeared from her face.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“You’re still upset about that?””

“Who bought it?””

She turned back to the stove.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s a lie.””

She laughed.

“Emily, you need to stop acting like some detective.””

I stepped closer.

“I got a picture of Mom’s car.””

The spatula stopped moving.

Vanessa slowly turned around.

“What?””

I watched her carefully.

“I said I got a picture of the Honda.””

Her face changed.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Just a flash.

But enough.

“Where did you get that?””

The question came too quickly.

I stared at her.

“You knew.””

She immediately recovered.

“Knew what?””

“That the car had something inside.””

Vanessa slammed the spatula down.

“Don’t be ridiculous.””

“Then why did you ask where the picture came from?””

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“You’re imagining things.””

“No. I’m not.””

She walked past me.

“This conversation is over.””

I grabbed my phone and called my father.

He answered after several rings.

“Emily?””

“Dad, I need to talk to you.””

“I’m at work.””

“Did you know about the envelope?””

Silence.

That was all I needed.

“You knew.””

“Emily, listen—”

“You knew Mom left something in that car?””

His voice dropped.

“Who told you?””

I felt cold.

“Why does that matter?””

“Because you need to understand something.””

“No, Dad. I need you to explain why you sold my mother’s car when you knew it had something important inside.””

He didn’t answer.

Then he said:

“Come home tonight. We’ll talk.””

“You should have talked three years ago.””

I hung up.

An hour later, I was sitting across from Mr. Harrison in his office.

The walls were covered with photographs of his decades as an attorney.

He looked older than I remembered.

More tired.

“Emily,” he said, “your mother trusted very few people.””

I stared at him.

“Was my father one of them?””

His silence was painful.

“Not completely.””

I leaned forward.

“What does that mean?””

He opened a folder.

Inside was a copy of my mother’s handwritten letter.

The handwriting I knew better than anything.

My eyes filled instantly.

“She wrote this six months before she passed.””

“Why didn’t I see it?””

“Because she instructed me not to release it until certain conditions were met.””

“What conditions?””

He looked at me.

“One of them was if someone attempted to transfer ownership of your car without your permission.””

My heart stopped.

“She planned for this?””

“Yes.””

I looked down at the letter.

“What did she know?””

Mr. Harrison folded his hands.

“Your mother suspected someone might try to control your inheritance.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Emily, your mother was not afraid of dying.””

I swallowed.

“She was afraid of leaving you alone with the wrong people.””

Tears burned my eyes.

I looked away.

“What was in the envelope?””

“A key.””

“A key?””

“Yes.””

“To what?””

He reached into a drawer and placed a small photograph on the desk.

It showed the Honda.

But not from the outside.

It showed the glove compartment.

And inside it was a hidden compartment I had never noticed.

My breath caught.

“Your mother had a storage box installed inside the dashboard.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because she didn’t trust anyone who could access your home.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered immediately.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

“Are you Emily Carter?””

“Yes.””

“I have your mother’s car.””

I stood up.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Daniel.””

The man hesitated.

“I bought the Honda yesterday.””

“Where is it?””

“I can’t tell you over the phone.””

My heart pounded.

“Why not?””

Because what he said next changed everything.

“Because someone has been following me since I found what was hidden in the glove compartment.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“What did you find?””

The line went silent.

May you like

Then Daniel whispered:

“Your mother left something behind that your stepmother was willing to destroy a family to get.””
