Chapter 14: The Final Message From My Mother
The company archive was hidden beneath the old headquarters building.
A place nobody used anymore.
That was exactly where my mother wanted it.
Forgotten.
Protected.
Waiting.
Vanessa walked through the underground hallway like she had been there before.
That terrified me.
“How do you know this place?””
She didn’t answer.
Sarah walked beside me.
“She’s been here.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You found it before.””
Vanessa smiled.
“Of course.””
“Then why didn’t you take everything?””
“Because I didn’t have the key.””
She looked at me.
“Your mother made sure of that.””
We reached a steel door.
A small scanner sat beside it.
Vanessa inserted the keycard.
The machine beeped.
The door opened.
Inside was a room full of files.
Hard drives.
Documents.
Photos.
Everything my mother had spent years protecting.
Vanessa walked in slowly.
Almost emotionally.
“This is it.””
She opened a cabinet.
Inside was a small recording device.
My heart stopped.
My mother’s final message.
Vanessa picked it up.
Then looked at me.
“Do you want to hear it?””
I said nothing.
She pressed play.
Static.
Then my mother’s voice.
“If you are hearing this, Vanessa, then you found the archive.””
Vanessa froze.
My mother continued.
“I knew you would.””
Sarah covered her mouth.
The recording went on.
“You have spent years pretending to be smarter than everyone around you.””
Vanessa’s expression darkened.
“But the truth is simple.””
A pause.
“You always reveal yourself when you think you’ve won.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Her hands tightened around the recorder.
My mother continued.
“Every document in this archive has been copied.””
My breath caught.
“There is a duplicate record stored with my attorney, my sister, and the authorities.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“No.””
The recording continued.
“Vanessa, you didn’t destroy my family.””
“You exposed yourself.””
Silence.
Then my mother said the words I would never forget.
“And Emily, if you are listening…”
My eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.””
I covered my mouth.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t stay longer.””
A tear fell.
“But I need you to understand something.””
The recording crackled.
“Your father hurt me. He disappointed me. But he was not the person who planned this.””
I looked at Vanessa.
My mother’s voice became stronger.
“The person responsible was Vanessa.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa dropped the recorder.
“No.””
Sarah stepped back.
“She knew.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“You think you understand everything now?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I did.
Almost.
Then Vanessa laughed.
“You still don’t know the worst part.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She smiled.
“Your father helped me.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
“He didn’t just make mistakes.””
She walked closer.
“He chose.””
I felt sick.
“No.””
“Yes.””
She looked almost satisfied.
“He signed everything.””
Sarah shook her head.
“Vanessa, stop.””
“No.””
Her voice rose.
“She deserves to know.””
She looked at me.
“Your father gave me access because he wanted the company.””
I stepped back.
My mother’s recording had defended him.
But Vanessa’s words…
They hurt because they sounded possible.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
She pulled out a document.
A contract.
My father’s signature.
A transfer agreement.
My blood went cold.
“He agreed to give me control.””
I stared at the paper.
Then I noticed something.
A date.
The day before my mother died.
My hands started shaking.
“No.””
Vanessa smiled.
“You finally understand.””
My phone suddenly rang.
Mr. Harrison.
I answered.
His voice was urgent.
“Emily, listen carefully.””
“What?””
“We found the original evidence.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Where?””
“At the police station.””
My heart raced.
“Then it’s over.””
“No.””
His voice became quieter.
“Because there’s one thing we discovered.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“The signature on that contract was forged.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Her smile disappeared.
Mr. Harrison continued.
“Your father didn’t betray your mother that night.””
The room went silent.
“He was set up.””
I stared at Vanessa.

And for the first time…
She looked afraid.
