Chapter 7: The Recording My Father Feared

I listened to my mother’s voice again and again.

Not because I didn’t understand what she said.

Because I couldn’t accept it.

My father knew.

He knew about the hidden compartment.

He knew about the secret.

And he still let Vanessa sell the car.

The woman who had raised me for years as my father’s wife had been searching for something my mother died protecting.

But my father…

My own father…

Had been one step ahead of her.

Claire turned off the recording.

The silence afterward felt heavier than the words themselves.

“Emily,” she said gently, “I know this is difficult.””

I looked at her.

“Difficult?””

My voice cracked.

“My father stood there while Vanessa took my mother’s car. He watched me fall apart.””

Claire didn’t argue.

Because she knew I was right.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Your father may not be the person you thought he was.””

I laughed bitterly.

“No. He’s worse.””

I picked up the recording device.

“How long have you had this?””

Claire looked down.

“Three years.””

“Three years?””

My anger rose.

“You had my mother’s final message for three years?””

“She asked me not to give it to you unless the car was taken.””

I stared at her.

“She planned everything.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire took a deep breath.

“Because your mother knew she might not be able to protect you herself.””

My eyes burned.

I hated that my mother had to think about these things while she was dying.

She should have been thinking about treatments.

About recovery.

About living.

Not about protecting me from the people closest to us.

My phone rang.

Dad.

I stared at the screen.

Claire noticed.

“Are you going to answer?””

I almost didn’t.

But I needed answers.

I picked up.

“Where are you?””

My father’s voice sounded desperate.

“Emily, please listen to me.””

“No.””

I walked outside the coffee shop.

“You listen to me.””

There was a pause.

“You knew about the car.””

Silence.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

“Emily…”

“You knew about the compartment. You knew about the key. You knew Mom left something behind.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I closed my eyes.

“That’s the same excuse everyone uses.””

“It’s the truth.””

“Then why did you sell the car?””

His breathing changed.

Because he didn’t have an answer.

Finally, he said:

“Because Vanessa was getting too close.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She knew there was something in the car.””

“So you gave it to her?””

“No.””

His voice became urgent.

“I thought I could get it before she did.””

The words hit me.

“You thought.””

“Yes.””

“You risked my mother’s last gift because you thought you could control the situation?””

“Emily, you don’t understand what Vanessa is capable of.””

I looked back through the coffee shop window at Claire.

“She’s dangerous?””

My father hesitated.

Then whispered:

“She’s not the only one.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

Before he answered, another voice came through the phone.

Vanessa.

“You should have told her years ago.””

My blood froze.

My father wasn’t alone.

“Dad?””

The line went quiet.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Emily.””

I gripped the phone.

“How long have you been there?””

She laughed softly.

“Long enough.””

My father said something in the background.

I couldn’t hear it.

Then Vanessa said:

“Your mother always thought she was smarter than everyone.””

I felt rage burning through me.

“Don’t talk about my mother.””

“Oh, Emily. You have no idea what your mother did.””

“She protected me.””

“No.””

Vanessa’s voice turned cold.

“She destroyed this family.””

I looked at Claire.

She immediately shook her head.

Don’t believe her.

“Where is my father?””

Vanessa ignored the question.

“Come home.””

“No.””

“Then you’ll never know the truth.””

I tightened my grip.

“You mean your version.””

“No,” she said.

Then she whispered:

“The truth about why your mother was afraid of me.””

The call ended.

I stood there frozen.

Daniel walked outside.

“What happened?””

I looked at him.

“She wants me to come home.””

Claire came out behind him.

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“You cannot go there alone.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

Claire’s face was serious.

“Because Vanessa knows you have the key.””

I reached into my pocket.

The small silver key felt heavier than ever.

“How could she know?””

Claire looked at the recording device in my hand.

Then at me.

And said:

“Because someone close to your mother helped Vanessa find it.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

May you like

Claire looked away.

“Someone you still trust.””
