Chapter 6: The Woman From My Mother’s Past
The woman sat across from me without asking permission.
Like she owned the table.
Like she owned the entire room.
Daniel looked ready to leave.
But I couldn’t move.
I was staring at the photograph between us.
My mother.
Vanessa.
Together.
Smiling.
That was impossible.
My entire life, Vanessa had told me she barely knew my mother.
That they had never been close.
That my mother had always disliked her.
But the woman in the photo looked different.
They weren’t fighting.
They weren’t angry.
They looked like friends.
“Who are you?”” I asked.
The woman removed her sunglasses.
“My name is Claire Bennett.””
The name meant nothing.
But Daniel reacted.
“You’re Claire Bennett?””
She looked at him.
“Yes.””
He swallowed.
“I thought you disappeared.””
“I needed to.””
I looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Claire looked at the photograph.
“Your mother spent the last months of her life trying to protect you.””
“I know.””
“No,” Claire said softly.
“You don’t.””
Her words annoyed me.
“Then explain.””
She leaned forward.
“Your mother discovered Vanessa wasn’t who she claimed to be.””
My heart pounded.
“What does that mean?””
Claire glanced around before answering.
“Vanessa didn’t enter your father’s life by accident.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“She planned it?””
“Yes.””
Daniel spoke quietly.
“Why?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because of your mother’s trust.””
The two million dollars.
The inheritance.
The money.
I felt sick.
“So Vanessa married my father for money?””
“Not just money.””
Claire opened her bag and placed another folder on the table.
“She wanted control.””
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Marriage records.
Financial transfers.
Emails.
My eyes moved across the pages.
Then I saw it.
A payment.
From my father.
To Vanessa.
Before they were married.
“What is this?””
Claire answered.
“Proof that Vanessa was already connected to your father before your mother died.””
My hands shook.
“But why?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because your mother changed her will.””
Everything stopped.
“What?””
“She found out your father was in financial trouble. She was afraid he would lose everything.””
I looked at the papers.
“And she protected me.””
“Yes.””
Claire nodded.
“Your mother created the trust so your father could not access your inheritance.””
The pieces started fitting together.
The car.
The envelope.
The warning.
“She knew.””
Claire’s expression softened.
“She knew someone would try to take it.””
My phone buzzed.
A text message.
From Vanessa.
*Stop digging into things you don’t understand.*
A second message appeared.
*Your mother made mistakes. Don’t repeat them.*
I showed Claire.
She didn’t look surprised.
“She knows we’re talking.””
“How?””
Claire stared at the screen.
“Because she’s been watching you since you found the car.””
A chill ran through me.
I stood.
“I need to get that key somewhere safe.””
Claire grabbed my wrist.
“Wait.””
I looked at her.
“There’s something you need to know first.””
“What?””
She hesitated.
Then reached into her bag and pulled out an old recording device.
“This belonged to your mother.””
My breath caught.
“Why do you have it?””
“Because she gave it to me the night before she went to the hospital.””
I stared.
“What’s on it?””
Claire pressed the button.
Static filled the air.
Then…
My mother’s voice.
Weak.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
“Claire, if Emily ever hears this, it means I failed to keep her safe.””
My knees nearly gave out.
The recording continued.
“Emily, sweetheart…”
Tears filled my eyes.
“I need you to know something about your father.””
I held my breath.
Then my mother said the words that shattered everything I believed.
“He didn’t sell the car because Vanessa convinced him.””
The recording paused.
A few seconds of silence.
Then:
“He sold the car because he knew what was hidden inside.””
The coffee shop disappeared around me.
All I could hear was my mother’s voice.
And the terrible truth waiting behind it.
May you like
My father hadn’t been protecting me.
He had been trying to find the secret before I did.
