Chapter 11: The Woman My Mother Never Mentioned

I waited for my father to explain.

He didn’t.

He just stood there.

Looking at the photograph in my hand.

Looking at the past he had spent years hiding from me.

“Dad.””

My voice was quieter now.

“Who is Sarah?””

He sat down slowly.

For the first time, I didn’t see my father as the man who betrayed me.

I saw someone who was afraid.

But fear didn’t excuse anything.

Not anymore.

“Sarah was your mother’s sister.””

I froze.

“What?””

Claire looked shocked too.

“Your mother never told you?””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

I stared at him.

“My mother had a sister?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t I know?””

His eyes dropped.

“Because they had a falling out.””

“What kind of falling out?””

A long silence.

Then he said:

“A painful one.””

I hated that answer.

Everyone had a way of giving me half the truth.

Just enough to keep me chasing the rest.

“What does Sarah have to do with the documents?””

My father looked toward the window.

“Everything.””

He stood and walked to a cabinet.

From inside, he pulled out an old envelope.

“I kept this because I didn’t know what else to do.””

I took it.

The handwriting on the front made my heart stop.

My mother’s.

*For Emily, if Sarah ever returns.*

I looked at my father.

“You had this the entire time?””

His face filled with guilt.

“Yes.””

“You had another letter from Mom?””

“I didn’t know when to give it to you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Funny. Nobody ever knows when to tell me the truth.””

I opened it.

Emily,

If you are reading this, then Sarah has likely come back into your life.

Please listen before judging her.

She hurt me.

But she was also the person who helped me discover the truth.

My hands froze.

Helped?

I continued.

Sarah found evidence that someone was manipulating your father before I did.

Someone who wanted access to everything I built.

Someone who had been watching our family for years.

My eyes moved down the page.

And then I saw the name.

Vanessa.

My mother knew.

But there was something else.

Sarah was the first person who warned her.

I looked at my father.

“Where is she?””

He looked away.

“I don’t know.””

“Dad.””

“She disappeared after your mother died.””

“Because of Vanessa?””

He nodded.

“She was afraid.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

A location.

Then a single sentence.

*I have what your mother wanted you to find.*

Below it was a name.

Sarah.

I showed everyone.

Claire immediately grabbed her coat.

“We’re going.””

My father stood.

“No.””

We looked at him.

“You can’t go.””

“Why?””

His face was pale.

“Because if Sarah contacted you, Vanessa knows too.””

As if summoned by his words, my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

“What do you want?””

Her voice was calm.

Almost cheerful.

“Emily, I think you’re finally understanding.””

“Understanding what?””

“That your mother wasn’t protecting you from me.””

I said nothing.

“She was protecting you from everyone.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“It means your mother knew your father would eventually betray her.””

I looked at my father.

He looked away.

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

Her voice lowered.

“Ask him why he never told you about the night your mother died.””

The room went silent.

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa continued.

“Ask your father where he really was.””

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He didn’t speak.

That was enough.

“Where were you?””

His face changed.

And I knew.

I knew before he answered.

“I wasn’t at the hospital.””

The words hit me harder than anything before.

“What?””

“I left.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“Because your mother found out what I had done.””
