Chapter 9: The Conversation I Was Never Supposed To Hear
I moved quietly up the stairs.
Every step felt heavier.
Claire’s voice came from Noah’s bedroom.
Soft.
Gentle.
The same voice she used whenever she wanted people to believe she was kind.
“Buddy, you know your dad loves you, right?””
Noah answered quietly.
“Yes.””
“Then you know he would never want you hurt.””
I stopped outside the door.
My heart started racing.
Because I knew that tone.
She wasn’t comforting him.
She was preparing him.
“Dad isn’t mad at me,” Noah said.
Claire paused.
“He’s confused.””
“About what?””
I held my breath.
“About your mom.””
Silence.
Then Noah asked:
“Is my mom bad?””
My stomach dropped.
Claire sighed.
“I don’t want to say bad.””
A pause.
“But sometimes people make choices that hurt others.””
I pushed the door open.
“That’s enough.””
Claire turned around.
Noah looked shocked.
“Dad?””
I walked inside.
“What are you doing?””
Claire stood.
“I was talking to him.””
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“You were controlling the story.””
She looked offended.
“How dare you.””
“Noah deserves the truth.””
Claire looked at him.
Then back at me.
“You’re going to destroy him.””
I shook my head.
“No. Lies destroyed him.””
Noah looked between us.
“Dad…”
I knelt beside him.
“Buddy, adults sometimes make mistakes.””
“Is Mom coming back?””
The question broke me.
I looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
That was the first honest answer I had given him.
And somehow, it felt better than every lie before.
Claire stepped closer.
“You see?””
She pointed at me.
“He doesn’t even know what he’s doing.””
I stood.
“Leave Noah out of this.””
She laughed quietly.
“You’re acting like I’m the enemy.””
I looked at her.
“Because you made yourself one.””
For the first time, Claire lost control.
Her voice became sharp.
“You have no idea what I did for this family!””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I know exactly what you did.””
Her face changed.
“You found the documents.””
I didn’t answer.
She knew.
That was enough.
Noah looked scared.
I immediately softened.
“Buddy, go get your backpack. We’re going to spend the night at Uncle Mark’s.””
His eyes widened.
“Are we leaving?””
I knelt.
“Just for tonight.””
He looked at Claire.
Then he looked away.
That hurt her.
I saw it.
Not because she loved him.
Because she was losing control.
As Noah packed, Claire followed me downstairs.
“You think you’ve won?””
I turned.
“This isn’t a game.””
She smiled.
“You really think Rachel is innocent?””
“I think she deserves a chance to speak.””
“She left.””
“You made sure she did.””
Claire stepped closer.
“You don’t know what you’re walking into.””
“I know enough.””
She stared at me.
Then whispered:
“Ask Rachel why she never told you about the night Noah was born.””
My expression changed.
“What?””
Claire smiled.
“There’s something she never told you.””
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
A message from Rachel.
One sentence.
“Ethan, you need to know what happened in the hospital the night Noah was born.””
I looked at Claire.
Then at the message.
Because suddenly I realized…
May you like
The truth I had been searching for wasn’t only about why Rachel left.
It was about what happened before Noah ever came home.
