Chapter 12: The Final Piece Of The Puzzle

I stared at the hospital bracelet.

Noah’s name.

His birth date.

The tiny plastic band I thought had disappeared years ago.

Claire watched me.

“You remember that night?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I was trying to understand.

“Where did you get this?””

She smiled.

“You never asked enough questions.””

My hands tightened.

“Explain.””

Claire sat down.

“You and Rachel were falling apart before Noah was born.””

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

She leaned forward.

“You just don’t want to remember.””

I hated that part of her.

The way she mixed lies with small pieces of truth.

It made everything harder to separate.

“I loved Rachel,” I said.

Claire laughed quietly.

“You loved the idea of her.””

“No.””

“You were miserable.””

I shook my head.

“You were my friend.””

“Yes.””

Her voice softened.

“That’s why I knew exactly how to help you.””

I looked at her.

“And destroy us?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she opened the document.

“This is why you need to listen.””

I looked down.

It was a hospital authorization form.

My name was on it.

Rachel’s name was on it.

And Claire’s signature.

“What is this?””

“Permission.””

“For what?””

She looked at me.

“To make medical decisions for Noah if something happened.””

I frowned.

“Why would you have that?””

Claire looked away.

“Because Rachel asked me.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“She trusted me.””

That was the one thing I didn’t understand.

Rachel had trusted her.

That was the tragedy.

Claire didn’t break into our lives.

We invited her in.

Rachel invited her.

I did.

And Noah paid the price.

“Why keep this?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because I knew one day you’d find out.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I held up the document.

“You kept this because you wanted control.””

Her expression hardened.

“You think you know everything now?””

“I know enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

She stood.

“There’s one thing Rachel never told you.””

I stayed silent.

Claire walked closer.

“The reason she left wasn’t just because of me.””

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?””

She whispered:

“Ask her about the night she signed custody papers.””

I stared at her.

“She never signed anything.””

Claire smiled.

“She did.””

“That’s impossible.””

“She signed something.””

I looked at the document again.

My mind racing.

“What did she sign?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Instead, she picked up her phone.

Then placed it on the table.

A recording was already playing.

Rachel’s voice came through the speaker.

“Ethan, if you’re hearing this…”

I froze.

Claire watched my reaction.

Rachel’s voice continued.

“I need you to understand why I made the decision I made.””

The recording stopped.

Claire looked at me.

“Now you’ll finally know.””

I stared at the phone.

Because after years of searching for the truth…

I was about to hear Rachel’s side of the story.

And something in her voice told me…

May you like

She wasn’t only hiding what Claire did.

She was hiding what I did.
