Chapter 8: The Witness Who Lied
I stared at the signature for almost an hour.
My name was there.
My handwriting wasn’t.
Someone had copied it.
Someone had created a fake agreement and used it to control my life.
But the question that kept repeating in my head was simple.
Who helped Claire?
The answer came the next morning.
My phone rang.
It was my older brother, Mark.
The same Mark who had been at Noah’s birthday party.
The same Mark who stayed silent when Claire pushed Noah away.
I answered.
“Ethan?””
His voice sounded nervous.
“We need to talk.””
I looked at the custody papers on the table.
“About what?””
A pause.
“About Claire.””
My grip tightened.
“You knew.””
Silence.
That was enough.
“You knew.””
Mark sighed.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
I stood up.
“You were protecting yourself.””
“It wasn’t that simple.””
“Then explain it.””
He was quiet.
Finally, he said:
“Meet me.””
An hour later, we sat in a quiet coffee shop.
Mark looked exhausted.
Not guilty.
Exhausted.
“How long?”” I asked.
He looked down.
“Since before Rachel left.””
My chest tightened.
“You helped her?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I didn’t know the whole truth.””
“Then what did you know?””
Mark rubbed his face.
“Claire came to me after Rachel disappeared.””
“And?””
“She told me Rachel left because she was unstable.””
I laughed bitterly.
“And you believed her?””
“I was angry too.””
“At Rachel?””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
Mark continued.
“She showed me messages. She showed me documents.””
“The fake ones?””
He nodded.
“I know that now.””
I leaned forward.
“When did you find out?””
Mark looked away.
“When I saw Rachel at the hospital.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She came back once.””
“When?””
“Three years ago.””
My heart sank.
“Three years ago?””
Mark nodded.
“She was there because Noah was sick.””
My hands curled into fists.
“She came to see him?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Mark’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because Claire got there first.””
I felt sick.
“What did she do?””
“She convinced Rachel to leave.””
I stared at him.
“Again?””
Mark nodded.
“She told Rachel that Noah was happy. That coming back would confuse him.””
I looked out the window.
All those years.
Rachel had been close.
And I never knew.
“Why are you telling me now?””
Mark looked at me.
“Because I saw Noah at the party.””
He swallowed.
“When Claire moved him away from that picture, I knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That she never changed.””
I looked down.
Mark reached into his jacket.
“I kept something.””
He placed an old envelope on the table.
My name was written on it.
Again.
Another letter.
“Where did you get this?””
“Rachel gave it to me.””
My heart stopped.
“She knew I wouldn’t listen.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Not from Rachel.
From Claire.
My eyes moved across the page.
And with every sentence, my anger grew.
Because it wasn’t a confession.
It was a warning.
A warning Claire wrote years ago.
A warning about what she planned to do if Rachel ever came back.
Then I reached the final line.
“If Ethan chooses Noah over me, I’ll make sure he loses both.””
I looked at Mark.
“Did Claire write this?””
He nodded.
“She gave it to me by mistake.””
I folded the paper.
The person who destroyed my son’s childhood wasn’t hiding anymore.
She was preparing for war.
And when I got home, I found the front door open.
I walked inside.
The house was silent.
Then I heard Claire’s voice from upstairs.
May you like
Talking to Noah.
And she was telling him something she knew I would never forgive.
