Chapter 5: The Person Who Changed Everything
I drove to Rachel’s old apartment without thinking.
I didn’t even know if she still lived there.
I just needed answers.
For five years, I had accepted a story because it was easier.
Rachel left.
Rachel moved on.
Rachel forgot us.
But now every memory felt different.
Every goodbye.
Every unanswered phone call.
Every birthday without her.
What if I had been wrong?
When I arrived, the building looked older than I remembered.
The paint was peeling.
The hallway lights flickered.
I stood outside the apartment door for almost a minute before knocking.
Nothing.
I knocked again.
Then I heard footsteps.
The door opened.
And I saw her.
Rachel.
Older.
Tired.
But still the same person I once loved.
Her eyes widened.
“Ethan?””
Hearing my name from her voice almost broke me.
“Rachel.””
She looked past me.
“Is Noah okay?””
That was the first thing she asked.
Not why I was there.
Not why I disappeared.
Noah.
“He’s okay.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Does he know?””
I swallowed.
“Not everything.””
She closed her eyes.
Like she had been waiting for this moment for years.
“Come in.””
We sat across from each other in her small apartment.
There were no pictures of Noah.
No reminders.
Nothing.
That hurt more than I expected.
“Why didn’t you come back?”” I asked.
Rachel looked down.
“I tried.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“I tried so many times.””
“Then why didn’t I know?””
She looked at me.
“Because Claire made sure you didn’t.””
The words felt like another punch.
I leaned forward.
“Tell me exactly what happened.””
Rachel took a deep breath.
“The night before I left, Claire came to my apartment.””
“Why?””
“She told me you were choosing her. She told me you were tired of me. She said you wanted full custody.””
I shook my head.
“I never said that.””
“I know that now.””
Rachel’s voice trembled.
“But back then, I was terrified.””
She explained that Claire showed her fake messages.
Messages that looked like they came from me.
Messages saying I wanted Rachel gone.
“She convinced me you hated me,” Rachel whispered.
I stared at the floor.
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought so too.””
“Then why did you leave?””
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“Because she threatened Noah.””
My entire body went still.
“What did she say?””
Rachel looked at me.
“She said if I fought her, she would make sure Noah grew up believing I abandoned him.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“She knew exactly where to hurt me.””
Rachel wiped her tears.
“I thought leaving temporarily would protect him.””
“But you never came back.””
Her face collapsed.
“I tried.””
The room became silent.
“She changed her number. She blocked my emails. She moved your house. Every time I tried to contact you, someone answered first.””
I felt sick.
All those years.
I thought Rachel gave up.
But maybe she had been fighting a battle I never saw.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Rachel laughed sadly.
“Because every time I tried, Claire already knew.””
Then she walked to a drawer and pulled out a small box.
Inside were dozens of unopened birthday cards.
All addressed to Noah.
My eyes burned.
“She kept them?””
Rachel nodded.
“She never let him see them.””
I looked at the cards.
Seven birthdays.
Seven years of love hidden away.
Then Rachel handed me one final envelope.
“This one is different.””
I looked at the front.
It had my name on it.
Not Noah’s.
“Why is this for me?””
Rachel looked scared.
“Because I wrote it the night I realized Claire wasn’t just trying to separate me from Noah.””
She paused.
“She was trying to replace me.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Claire holding baby Noah.
But behind them, written in black ink, was a message.
A message that changed everything.
“She didn’t choose Noah because she loved him.””
May you like
Rachel whispered.
“She chose him because she wanted what belonged to me.””
