Chapter 6: The Evidence She Forgot

I stared at the photograph until the words blurred.

Claire holding my baby son.

Smiling.

Looking like the perfect stepmother.

The woman everyone believed had saved our family.

But behind the picture was a sentence that made my hands shake.

“She wanted what belonged to me.””

I looked at Rachel.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel sat down slowly.

“I don’t know everything.””

“You have to tell me what you know.””

She looked toward the window.

“Claire always wanted the life I had.””

“That’s not enough.””

“I know.””

Rachel’s voice became softer.

“But she didn’t just want you, Ethan.””

She looked at me.

“She wanted my place.””

I thought about every moment.

Every family dinner.

Every holiday.

Every time Claire corrected Noah when he called her Mom.

She never encouraged him.

She never stopped him either.

She wanted the role.

But only when it benefited her.

“When did you realize?””

Rachel looked down.

“The day I left.””

She told me Claire came to her apartment carrying a folder.

Inside were papers.

Custody documents.

Financial records.

Photos.

All designed to make Rachel look irresponsible.

“She told me you already signed everything.””

I frowned.

“I never signed anything.””

“I know.””

Rachel looked at me.

“But she made me believe I had already lost.””

I felt anger rising.

Not explosive anger.

Something colder.

The kind that comes when you finally understand how long someone has manipulated you.

“Why are you telling me now?””

Rachel looked toward the door.

“Because I saw Noah.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

I stared at her.

“You saw him?””

She nodded.

“From across the street.””

“Why didn’t you come to him?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Because he looked happy.””

That answer hurt.

“She was there with him?””

“Yes.””

Rachel wiped her face.

“She was holding his hand.””

I looked away.

Because I understood.

Rachel didn’t want to ruin his world.

Even if that world was built on lies.

Before I left, Rachel grabbed my arm.

“Ethan.””

I turned.

“You need to be careful.””

“With Claire?””

Rachel nodded.

“She knows how to make people believe her.””

I looked at the envelope.

The photo.

The hidden birthday cards.

“I need proof.””

Rachel nodded.

“I know.””

When I returned home, the house was quiet.

Too quiet.

I walked upstairs.

Noah was sitting on his bed drawing.

“What are you making?””

He looked up.

“A family picture.””

My heart broke.

He showed me the paper.

There was me.

There was him.

There was Rachel.

And there was a space left empty.

“Who goes there?”” I asked.

He shrugged.

“I don’t know yet.””

I sat beside him.

“Buddy…”

Before I could say anything, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One photo.

My face went pale.

It was a picture of Rachel and me outside her apartment.

Someone had taken it today.

Under the photo was a message:

“I told you to leave the past alone.””

I looked at Noah.

Then at the stairs.

Because someone was standing there.

Watching us.

And when I looked up, I saw Claire holding the same expression she had at the birthday party.

May you like

A calm smile.

Like she already knew what I had found.
