Chapter 10: The Night Noah Was Born

I didn’t sleep at Mark’s house.

Neither did Noah.

He lay on the guest bed holding his blanket, staring at the ceiling.

I sat beside him.

For the first time in years, I didn’t know what to say.

I had always been the person with answers.

When Noah scraped his knee.

When he had nightmares.

When he wondered why other kids had mothers at school events.

I always found a way to make things feel okay.

But now?

I was standing in the middle of a truth I couldn’t explain.

“Dad?””

I looked down.

“Yeah, buddy?””

“Are you leaving too?””

The question hit me harder than anything Claire had said.

I immediately shook my head.

“No.””

I grabbed his hand.

“Never.””

“Promise?””

I squeezed his fingers.

“I promise.””

He finally closed his eyes.

But I stayed awake.

Because there was a question I needed answered.

The next morning, I met Rachel.

She was sitting in her car outside a small park.

When she saw me, she already knew.

“Claire told you.””

I nodded.

“She said there was something about the night Noah was born.””

Rachel looked down.

For a moment, she looked like someone carrying a memory too heavy to hold.

“She’s right.””

My chest tightened.

“What happened?””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“When Noah was born, I almost lost him.””

I waited.

“He had complications after delivery. He needed special care.””

I nodded slowly.

I remembered.

The fear.

The hospital lights.

The endless hours waiting.

But I never knew everything.

Rachel continued.

“I was exhausted. I wasn’t sleeping. I was scared.””

She looked at me.

“And Claire was the person I trusted.””

I froze.

“Claire was there?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Rachel looked away.

“Because she was your friend.””

That shocked me.

Before Claire was my wife, she was Rachel’s friend.

The realization made my stomach turn.

“She knew everything about us.””

Rachel’s voice became quieter.

“She knew our problems. She knew our fears. She knew what would hurt us.””

“What happened that night?””

Rachel looked at me.

“She told me you were outside the hospital arguing with your family.””

I frowned.

“I was?””

“No.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“She lied?””

Rachel nodded.

“She told me you were blaming me for Noah’s condition.””

My heart sank.

“That never happened.””

“I know.””

Rachel looked down.

“But I was scared. I had just given birth. I was vulnerable.””

She continued.

“Then Claire told me something else.””

“What?””

“That if I really loved Noah, I needed to let you raise him.””

I stared at her.

“She convinced me you were going to take him away.””

Rachel wiped a tear.

“I believed her.””

The silence between us felt unbearable.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Because when I finally tried…”

She stopped.

“Claire answered your phone.””

My hands tightened.

“She told me you didn’t want to hear from me.””

I closed my eyes.

Every missed call.

Every unanswered message.

Every moment I thought Rachel had abandoned us.

All because someone else controlled the connection.

“Why didn’t you fight harder?””

Rachel looked hurt.

“I did.””

Her voice cracked.

“I fought until I had nothing left.””

She reached into her bag.

Then placed a small notebook on the table.

“What is this?””

“My journal from that time.””

I opened it.

The first pages were hospital memories.

Then I saw dates.

Names.

Details.

And one entry made my blood run cold.

“Claire came to my room tonight. She said if I don’t leave, Ethan will lose Noah.””

I looked up.

“She wrote this?””

Rachel nodded.

“I kept everything.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message from Mark.

“Ethan. I found something in Claire’s old files.””

I opened it.

There was a photo attached.

A photo of Claire.

Standing outside the hospital.

The night Noah was born.

But she wasn’t alone.

She was meeting someone.

Someone who worked in the hospital.

Someone who had access to Noah’s records.

Under the picture was a message.

“Claire wasn’t just trying to replace Rachel.””

May you like

I stared at the screen.

“She was planning this from the beginning.””
