Chapter 13: The Truth I Was Afraid To Hear

I stared at the phone sitting on the table.

Rachel’s voice had just filled the room for three seconds.

Three seconds that changed everything.

Because for the first time since this nightmare began, I wasn’t just afraid of what Claire had done.

I was afraid of what I might have done.

“What is that recording?”” I asked.

Claire folded her arms.

“Something you should have heard years ago.””

“Where did you get it?””

She smiled.

“Ask Rachel.””

I grabbed my phone.

I was about to call her when Claire spoke again.

“But before you do, listen.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because if you hear her version first, you’ll believe her.””

I shook my head.

“You’ve spent years manipulating everyone. I’m not trusting anything you say.””

Claire’s face tightened.

“Then listen and decide for yourself.””

She pressed play.

Rachel’s voice came through the speaker.

“Ethan, if you’re hearing this, it means Claire finally showed you.””

There was a pause.

“She probably wants you to believe I betrayed you.””

My chest tightened.

“But the truth is… I made a decision that hurt everyone.””

I looked at Claire.

She was watching me carefully.

Rachel continued.

“When Noah was born, I was scared. I was exhausted. I wasn’t thinking clearly.””

Her voice trembled.

“Claire convinced me that you were going to leave me.””

I closed my eyes.

I already knew that part.

But then Rachel said something I didn’t expect.

“And I believed her because part of me was already afraid it was true.””

My eyes opened.

“What?””

Claire smiled faintly.

I ignored her.

Rachel continued.

“Ethan, before Noah was born, we were fighting constantly.””

I swallowed.

She wasn’t wrong.

We were.

The pressure of becoming parents had changed us.

The sleepless nights.

The fear.

The arguments.

But I never thought it meant our family was falling apart.

“I was afraid you regretted choosing me,” Rachel said.

My heart sank.

“I was afraid you only stayed because of Noah.””

I sat down.

Because those were words I never knew she carried.

Then the recording continued.

“When Claire came to me, she didn’t have to convince me that our marriage was broken.””

Silence.

“She only had to convince me that leaving would protect Noah.””

The recording stopped.

I looked at Claire.

“You edited it.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t want to hear the rest.””

My phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered immediately.

“Rachel.””

Her voice was quiet.

“She told you.””

“Yes.””

“Ethan, there’s something you need to understand.””

“I’m listening.””

Rachel took a breath.

“I did sign something.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“A temporary custody agreement.””

Claire watched me.

I turned away.

“Why?””

“Because I thought you hated me.””

My throat tightened.

“But I never—”

“I know that now.””

Rachel’s voice broke.

“But back then, I believed I was protecting Noah.””

I closed my eyes.

“How long?””

“What?””

“How long did Claire know?””

Rachel was silent.

Then she said:

“She helped prepare the papers.””

My anger returned.

“But you signed them.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But it also felt different.

Because Rachel wasn’t hiding.

She wasn’t twisting the truth.

She was admitting her mistake.

“I should have fought harder,” she whispered.

“No.””

I looked at Claire.

“She manipulated you.””

“But I still left.””

The pain in Rachel’s voice was real.

“I lost years with my son.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because she was right.

Everyone had lost something.

Except Claire.

After the call ended, I looked at my wife.

“You wanted me to hear that.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her expression changed.

“Because now you understand.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I pointed at the documents.

“I understand that Rachel made mistakes.””

Claire’s smile faded.

“But I also understand you used those mistakes to destroy her.””

She stepped closer.

“You still don’t see it.””

“See what?””

Claire whispered:

“That I was the only person who stayed.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“You were the person who made sure nobody else could.””

For the first time, Claire looked afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Because she realized I wasn’t confused anymore.

I knew the truth.

But before I could say anything else, my phone buzzed.

A message from Mark.

“Ethan, you need to come outside. Someone is here.””

I walked to the window.

And my blood froze.

A woman stood outside.

Holding Noah’s old birthday cards.

The cards Rachel had written every year.

But Rachel had already given them to me.

So who had the rest?
