Chapter 9: My Mother's Final Recording

I replayed the final sentence.

"It's the person who has been pretending to protect you.""

Dad stared at the phone.

Daniel looked like he might collapse.

Vanessa sat motionless on the sofa.

Detective Harris asked me to send him the original audio file.

Then he listened to the recording again.

My mother's voice continued.

"Ethan, I need you to know that I loved your father. I trusted him with everything. But there were things he never told me about his family.""

I looked at Dad.

He couldn't meet my eyes.

Mom continued.

"Your father believes Michael is responsible for what happened to his family. He believes Daniel helped him. But there's another person involved. Someone who has been standing beside us, smiling, while taking everything away.""

The recording ended with a faint sound.

A door opening.

Then a man's voice.

"Margaret, we need to talk.""

My mother answered.

"Not now. Ethan is coming back.""

The recording stopped.

Dad looked at me.

"Your mother recorded that?""

I nodded.

"Apparently.""

Detective Harris examined the audio file details.

"This was created on October fourteenth, at 11:38 P.M.""

Dad frowned.

"Four minutes before that visitor entered the hospital?""

Harris nodded.

"That's correct.""

Daniel suddenly stood.

"Play the beginning again.""

I did.

When the man's voice appeared, Daniel closed his eyes.

Dad noticed.

"You recognize him?""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

"Who?""

Daniel looked toward me.

"Robert Hayes.""

The attorney immediately protested.

"That's impossible. I wasn't at the hospital that night.""

Daniel pointed at the phone.

"That's your voice.""

Robert adjusted his jacket.

"Many people have similar voices.""

Detective Harris stepped forward.

"Mr. Hayes, I'd advise you not to make this worse.""

Robert looked toward the door.

Officer Lewis moved to block it.

"Stay where you are, sir.""

Robert's face hardened.

"You can't detain me without cause.""

"We're asking you to remain while we verify several statements.""

Dad walked toward him.

"Why were you in my wife's hospital room?""

Robert looked at the floor.

"I visited her.""

"When?""

"Earlier that evening.""

"Why?""

"She requested legal advice.""

Dad shook his head.

"You told me you hadn't spoken to her in weeks.""

Robert said nothing.

I remembered the forged documents.

The stolen inheritance.

The hospital form.

The false visitor record.

Everything was beginning to connect.

But I still couldn't understand why my mother had called him the person pretending to protect us.

Detective Harris asked Robert to explain his involvement.

Robert finally spoke.

"Margaret was planning to change the trust.""

"Change it how?"" Dad asked.

"She wanted to remove Vanessa as administrator and appoint an independent trustee.""

Vanessa jumped up.

"That's a lie!""

Robert continued.

"She also intended to report the missing money to federal authorities.""

Dad stared at him.

"Then why didn't you help her?""

Robert took a breath.

"Because I was involved in preparing the original transfer documents.""

Silence.

I felt my stomach turn.

"You helped them steal from her?""

Robert looked at me.

"I was paid to provide legal services.""

"To forge documents?""

He didn't answer.

Dad stepped closer.

"Did you know Michael was impersonating me at the hospital?""

Robert's expression changed.

"I knew someone was using your name.""

"Someone?""

"I didn't know it was Michael.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"You knew everything.""

Robert suddenly turned toward him.

"And you knew the money was being transferred!""

Daniel lowered his head.

Both men were pointing fingers.

Both had been involved.

But neither had explained the most important question.

What happened to my mother?

Detective Harris asked Robert about the unauthorized medication.

Robert shook his head.

"I had nothing to do with her medical treatment.""

"Did you see anyone administer medication?""

"No.""

"Did you see Michael?""

Robert hesitated.

Then he nodded.

"Yes.""

Dad stepped backward.

"What?""

"Michael was in the corridor when I arrived.""

"Did you enter the room together?""

"No.""

Robert rubbed his forehead.

"Margaret was frightened. She told me she had evidence that could send several people to prison. She wanted me to protect Ethan.""

I looked at him.

"Then why did you help steal my inheritance?""

Robert looked genuinely ashamed.

"Because I was threatened.""

"By whom?""

He looked toward Vanessa.

She shook her head.

"Don't.""

Robert continued.

"Michael had information about my own financial misconduct. He said he'd destroy my career if I refused to cooperate.""

Dad stared at him.

"So you sacrificed my wife's future to protect yourself.""

Robert lowered his eyes.

"Yes.""

I wanted to hit him.

But then I remembered Dad's fist connecting with my face.

I remembered how easily violence could replace answers.

I took a step back.

Detective Harris asked Officer Lewis to preserve Robert's phone and the documents.

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

"Mrs. Carter, we need to ask you some questions about the hospital visit.""

She stood abruptly.

"I'm not answering anything.""

"That's your choice.""

She grabbed her purse.

"I have a lawyer.""

Robert looked at her.

"You might want a different one.""

She glared at him.

"You promised me!""

Robert looked away.

Dad stepped forward.

"Promised you what?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Nothing.""

I looked at her.

"Was it you who gave Mom the wrong medication?""

She stared at me.

Then she said something I will never forget.

"Your mother was going to destroy all of us.""

Dad's face went white.

"Did you hurt her?""

Vanessa's mouth trembled.

"I didn't know what was in that medication.""

Daniel suddenly shouted.

"That's not true!""

Everyone turned.

Daniel pointed at her.

"You told me the doctor had approved it!""

Vanessa shook her head.

"You gave it to her!""

"Because you said it was prescribed!""

"Because Robert told me it was safe!""

Robert stepped forward.

"I never approved any medication!""

The three of them began arguing.

Detective Harris ordered everyone to stop talking.

Then my phone vibrated.

A new message.

This time, the sender's name appeared.

Laura Bennett.

Ethan, I know you're with the police. I'm outside the house. I have the original hospital recording, and I can prove who changed your mother's medication.

I rushed toward the window.

A black SUV was parked across the street.

A woman stood beside it.

She was holding a photograph.

Even from a distance, I could see the resemblance.

My mother's eyes.

My mother's smile.

I turned toward Dad.

"She's here.""

He looked through the window.

His face changed.

"Laura?""

The woman lifted her hand.

Then she pointed toward the passenger seat.

Someone was sitting inside the vehicle.

Someone wearing a baseball cap.

My phone rang.

Laura's voice came through, trembling.

"Ethan, don't open the door.""

I froze.

"Why?""

"Because Michael is with me.""

I looked at the SUV.

The passenger door opened.

A man stepped out.

He removed his cap.

And for the first time, I saw my father's identical face standing in our driveway.

Then Laura whispered:

"Your mother wasn't killed because of the inheritance. She was killed because she discovered what Michael did to your grandfather.""

Dad dropped the phone.

Michael looked directly at the house.

Then he smiled.

And raised one hand in a familiar greeting.

The same greeting Dad had used every morning when I was a little boy.

May you like

But the message that arrived seconds later was even worse.

Ethan, ask your father why he never told you that he was the one who put your grandfather in the ground.
