Chapter 4: The Key Inside My Mother's Locket
"ETHAN, DON'T YOU DARE OPEN THAT!""
Vanessa's scream echoed through the living room.
But it was too late.
I pressed my thumbnail against the tiny seam in the silver locket. A soft click sounded, and the pendant opened like a miniature box.
Inside was a small brass key.
No bigger than my fingernail.
Dad stared at it.
"Your mother hid a key inside her necklace?""
I nodded slowly.
"I've worn this every day since she died. I never knew it opened.""
Daniel moved toward me.
"Give it to me, Ethan. I'll explain everything.""
Dad immediately stepped between us.
"You're not going near my son.""
Daniel raised both hands.
"Marcus, I'm trying to help.""
"Then start talking.""
My uncle looked toward the staircase camera.
His eyes lingered there for a moment.
Then he turned back to Dad.
"Your wife discovered that money was disappearing from her investment accounts before she died. She confronted me because I was helping manage some of her business affairs.""
"Why were you managing her money?"" Dad demanded.
"She trusted me.""
"Apparently, she shouldn't have.""
Daniel swallowed.
"She found transfers to an offshore account. She believed Vanessa was involved, but she didn't have enough evidence to prove it.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"He's lying! He's trying to save himself!""
Daniel ignored her.
"Your wife asked me to investigate. I agreed. But when I discovered Robert was preparing false documents, I realized the situation was bigger than I thought.""
Dad looked toward the attorney.
"Did you know about the stolen money?""
Robert adjusted his tie.
"I prepared documents based on instructions provided to me.""
"That's not what I asked.""
Robert said nothing.
I held up the key.
"Where's the safety deposit box?""
Daniel hesitated.
"At First National Bank. Downtown Atlanta.""
"What's inside?""
"A flash drive, original financial records, and a letter your mother wrote to you.""
My throat tightened.
"A letter?""
Daniel nodded.
"She wanted you to have it when you turned eighteen.""
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
"He's making that up!""
I turned toward her.
"Why are you so afraid of a letter?""
She pointed at Daniel.
"Because he knows exactly what's inside that box!""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Vanessa, you should stop.""
"Don't tell me what to do!""
Dad slammed his hand against the dining table.
"ENOUGH!""
Everyone fell silent.
He looked at Daniel.
"Why didn't you tell me about the investigation three years ago?""
Daniel's face changed.
For a moment, he looked almost ashamed.
"Because I made a mistake.""
"What mistake?""
"I trusted Vanessa.""
She scoffed.
"That's convenient.""
Daniel continued.
"She told me she had documents proving your wife wanted to change the trust. She said she was protecting the family from a legal dispute. I believed her.""
Dad shook his head.
"You helped steal from my son.""
"I didn't take the money.""
"Your signature is on the power of attorney!""
Daniel looked down.
"I signed because Robert told me the documents were legitimate.""
I stared at him.
"Then why are you scared of what's inside the box?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at my locket.
"Because there's something your mother discovered about me, too.""
Dad stepped closer.
"What?""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"She found out I'd been borrowing money from her company. I was in serious debt. I intended to repay it, but Vanessa discovered the transfers and used them to pressure me.""
"So you helped her?"" I asked.
"I thought I could fix it.""
"You thought you could steal my mother's inheritance and call it fixing something?""
Daniel looked at me.
"I know what I did.""
For the first time, he sounded genuinely ashamed.
But shame wasn't going to bring my mother's money back.
Dad picked up his phone.
"We're going to the bank.""
Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
"Marcus, please. Think about what you're doing. You can't just believe everything these two men tell you.""
Dad looked at her hand.
Then he gently removed it.
"I believed you without asking a single question today. Look where that got us.""
He glanced at my bruised face.
"I won't make that mistake again.""
I grabbed my jacket.
Before we could leave, Vanessa stepped directly in front of the door.
"You're not going anywhere.""
Dad frowned.
"Move.""
She reached into her purse.
I expected her to pull out her phone.
Instead, she removed a folded sheet of paper.
It was a hospital document.
She held it up.
"Before you go looking for secrets, maybe you should see what your mother signed on her final night.""
Dad took the paper.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then his face became completely blank.
"What's this?""
Vanessa smiled.
"Your wife's medical consent form.""
Dad looked at the signature.
It was unmistakably my mother's.
But beneath it was another name.
Daniel Carter.
And beside his name was a handwritten note:
Patient requested that husband not be informed.
Dad looked up.
"Why was I kept out of this?""
Vanessa leaned closer.
"Because your wife was planning something behind your back.""
May you like
Then she looked directly at me.
"And your mother knew she might not survive long enough to tell you.""
