Chapter 6: The Visitor at 11:42

Dad called the police.

This time, he didn't ask anyone's permission.

He reported the suspected financial fraud, the forged documents, and Patricia's allegation about my mother's final night.

Vanessa sat on the sofa with her arms crossed.

Daniel stood near the window.

Robert had stopped pretending he wanted to leave.

Nobody spoke until two police officers arrived.

The older officer introduced himself as Detective Harris. His partner, Officer Lewis, carried a small notebook.

Detective Harris looked at the scattered documents.

"Mr. Carter, you said you have evidence of possible financial fraud and a suspicious medical incident involving your late wife?""

Dad nodded.

"My son has security footage, and we have a witness who worked at the hospital.""

Detective Harris looked at me.

"You're Ethan?""

"Yes.""

"Can you show me the footage?""

I opened the security application and played the recordings.

He watched Vanessa rip her dress.

He watched her scratch her arm.

He watched her collapse onto the sofa and scream for help before Dad entered.

When the clip ended, Detective Harris looked at her.

"Ma'am, do you want to explain this?""

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"It was a private family disagreement.""

"You accused this young man of assaulting you.""

"I was frightened.""

"Then why did you deliberately tear your own clothing?""

She looked away.

Officer Lewis began writing.

Vanessa turned toward Dad.

"Marcus, you're really going to let them treat me like a criminal?""

Dad's expression didn't change.

"You treated my son like one when you knew he was innocent.""

Detective Harris asked me to save the original recordings and send copies through the department's evidence portal.

Then he examined the financial documents.

"This is substantial," he said.

"We'll need a forensic review of the trust accounts.""

Dad nodded.

"Do whatever you need.""

Daniel suddenly cleared his throat.

"Detective, I think there has been a misunderstanding about my involvement.""

Harris looked at him.

"And you are?""

"Daniel Carter. Marcus's brother.""

"Your signature appears on this power of attorney.""

Daniel glanced at the document.

"I signed something three years ago, but I was told it was legitimate.""

"By whom?""

He hesitated.

"Robert Hayes.""

The attorney immediately objected.

"That's not accurate.""

Detective Harris raised a hand.

"One at a time.""

I watched Daniel carefully.

He was sweating.

Then my phone vibrated again.

The same unknown number.

Hospital visitor log. 11:42 P.M. Don't let them leave before you see it.

I showed Dad.

He looked at Detective Harris.

"We need to verify something at the hospital.""

Harris nodded.

"Give me the contact information. I'll request the records through the proper channels.""

Vanessa suddenly stood.

"Absolutely not.""

Everyone turned.

She looked at me.

"You're not dragging your mother's death into this just because you want revenge.""

I stared at her.

"My mother is already part of this. You made sure of that.""

Her lips tightened.

Detective Harris instructed Officer Lewis to remain while he contacted the hospital.

Ten minutes later, he returned.

"The hospital has confirmed that the visitor log from that night is available. They can provide a certified copy.""

Dad exhaled.

"Thank you.""

But Detective Harris wasn't finished.

"They also confirmed that a visitor entered your wife's room at 11:42 P.M. under a name that doesn't appear on the original family visitor list.""

Dad frowned.

"Who?""

Harris looked at his notes.

"Someone named Laura Bennett.""

Vanessa went completely still.

I noticed immediately.

"Who is Laura Bennett?""

Nobody answered.

I looked at Dad.

He was staring at Vanessa.

"Do you know that name?""

She shook her head too quickly.

"No.""

Detective Harris looked between them.

"Mr. Carter?""

Dad slowly shook his head.

"I don't know anyone by that name.""

Daniel suddenly laughed nervously.

"Maybe it's a nurse. There are hundreds of hospital employees.""

Harris checked his notes.

"She wasn't listed as an employee.""

He paused.

"According to the hospital, she entered using a visitor pass issued by the patient herself.""

I looked down at my phone.

Another message appeared.

Laura Bennett is not her real name.

Then another.

She is your mother's biological sister.

My breath caught.

My mother had always told me she was an only child.

Dad looked at me.

"Ethan? What's wrong?""

I showed him the messages.

He read them twice.

Then he looked at the detective.

"We need to find this woman.""

Detective Harris nodded.

"We'll start with the hospital's identification records.""

Vanessa suddenly rushed toward my phone.

"Give me that!""

Officer Lewis stepped between us.

"Ma'am, stay where you are.""

Vanessa struggled against his arm.

"That number is lying! Delete those messages!""

I pulled my phone away.

"How do you know it's lying if you don't know who Laura Bennett is?""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

For the first time, she looked genuinely terrified.

Then Daniel spoke.

"Because Laura Bennett doesn't exist anymore.""

Dad turned toward him.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head desperately.

But he continued.

"Your wife had a sister. Her name was Laura. They were separated when they were children after a family dispute. She changed her name years ago.""

Dad frowned.

"Why didn't my wife ever tell me?""

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"Because Laura was the person who originally helped her establish the inheritance trust.""

I felt a chill.

"Then why would she visit Mom secretly?""

Daniel looked directly at me.

"Because she discovered that Vanessa had been using your mother's identity to move money.""

Dad grabbed his brother's shirt.

"And you knew?""

Daniel didn't resist.

"I found out later.""

"How much later?""

Daniel's voice dropped.

"After your wife's funeral.""

Detective Harris intervened.

"Mr. Carter, step back.""

Dad released him.

Then Daniel reached into his jacket and removed a folded photograph.

It showed my mother sitting in a hospital garden.

Beside her was a woman who looked remarkably similar.

Same dark eyes.

Same smile.

Same small dimple on the left cheek.

On the back, my mother had written:

Laura and me. The last people who know the truth.

Dad stared at the photograph.

Then he noticed the date.

It had been taken two days before Mom died.

"Where did you get this?"" he whispered.

Daniel handed it to him.

"Your wife gave it to me.""

Dad looked up.

"Why?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Because she asked me to deliver something to Ethan after her death.""

"What?""

Daniel looked at me.

"A second key.""

My heart started racing.

"Where is it?""

Daniel reached into his pocket.

But before he could take anything out, Detective Harris's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his expression changed.

"Are you certain?""

A pause.

"Send the information to my phone.""

He ended the call and looked at us.

"The hospital has just confirmed that Laura Bennett was not the only visitor who entered your mother's room that night.""

Dad frowned.

"Who else?""

Detective Harris looked directly at me.

"According to the security records, someone entered at 11:56 P.M., fourteen minutes after Laura left.""

He turned his phone around.

The photograph showed a man wearing a baseball cap, his face partially hidden by the corridor's shadows.

But I recognized the jacket.

I recognized the watch.

And I recognized the way he held his head.

It was my father.

Dad stared at the screen.

"I wasn't there.""

Detective Harris zoomed in.

The visitor had left a signature at the reception desk.

Marcus Carter.

Dad shook his head.

"That's impossible. I was home that night.""

Then the detective enlarged the visitor's identification photograph.

The man looked almost exactly like my father.

Almost.

Because the small scar above his right eyebrow was on the opposite side.

Dad stepped backward.

His voice barely came out.

"That's not me.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then he whispered:

"Marcus, there's something you need to know about the night your wife died.""

He looked at me.

May you like

"Someone in this family has a twin.""

And suddenly, I understood why my mother had hidden two keys instead of one.
