Chapter 1: The Man Behind the Voice
The moment my father recognized the voice coming from his phone, his entire expression changed.
Vanessa had been standing beside the kitchen doorway, pretending to be the terrified victim of an eighteen-year-old boy. But when Dad whispered the name of the man on the recording, she stopped pretending.
"Daniel..."" Dad said.
My father's older brother.
My uncle.
The same man who had carried my mother's coffin three years earlier and stood beside Dad at her funeral.
Vanessa dropped her phone.
"Marcus, please. Let me explain.""
Dad didn't move.
On his phone, the recording continued.
Vanessa's voice came through the speakers.
"Once Ethan is out of the house, we can finish everything. Marcus won't suspect anything.""
Then Daniel answered.
"You promised me the money would be transferred before the end of the month.""
Dad's jaw tightened.
"What money?"" he whispered.
Vanessa rushed toward him.
"Turn that off!""
Dad raised one hand, stopping her.
"Don't touch me.""
I'd never heard my father speak to her like that.
My split lip was still bleeding. My cheek throbbed where his fist had landed. I stood beside the coffee table, holding my mother's photograph against my chest.
For once, nobody was asking me to apologize.
Dad replayed the recording.
Daniel's voice came through again.
"Just make sure the boy never finds out who really signed the papers after his mother died.""
Dad slowly looked at me.
"Ethan, what papers?""
I laughed bitterly.
"You tell me, Dad. I've been asking questions about Mom's inheritance for three years.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"He's lying. He's been obsessed with that money since he was a child.""
I stared at her.
"I never asked for a single dollar. I asked why Mom's lawyer stopped returning my calls.""
Dad turned toward her.
"What lawyer?""
Vanessa's eyes moved between us.
"Marcus, you're exhausted. You've had a terrible day. We should talk about this privately.""
"No," Dad said.
"We're talking about it now.""
He picked up his phone and called Daniel.
The call rang twice.
Then my uncle answered.
"Marcus! What's going on?""
Dad put the phone on speaker.
"I found the recording.""
Silence.
"What recording?"" Daniel asked.
"The one where you discuss my wife's inheritance with Vanessa.""
Another silence.
Then Daniel chuckled nervously.
"Brother, I think there's been some misunderstanding.""
Dad looked at Vanessa.
"Did you sign documents using my name?""
She folded her arms.
"I handled some administrative matters while you were grieving. You know how difficult that period was.""
"That's not an answer.""
"Marcus, I was trying to protect this family!""
I couldn't hold back anymore.
"Protect the family? You threw away Mom's jewelry. You destroyed her letters. You told Dad I was stealing from him every time I asked about her.""
Vanessa pointed at me.
"See? This is exactly what I mean! He's unstable!""
Dad looked at my bleeding mouth.
For the first time, he seemed to notice what he'd done.
"Ethan...""
I stepped away.
"Don't.""
His lips parted, but nothing came out.
Then Daniel spoke again.
"Marcus, listen to me. Whatever Vanessa told you, she didn't act alone.""
Dad's face went rigid.
"What does that mean?""
"It means you should ask her who prepared the original inheritance documents.""
Vanessa suddenly grabbed the phone.
"Daniel, shut up!""
But Dad snatched it back.
"Who prepared them?""
Daniel exhaled.
"Your wife's attorney.""
"Which attorney?""
"Robert Hayes.""
Dad stared at the floor.
Robert Hayes had been my mother's personal attorney for almost fifteen years. He'd helped her establish her estate, prepare her will, and manage the property she inherited from her parents.
He'd also attended her funeral.
Dad lowered the phone.
"Robert told me everything was handled properly.""
Daniel answered quietly.
"Then Robert lied to you, too.""
The call ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa did something I never expected.
She started laughing.
Not nervously.
Not hysterically.
She actually laughed.
"You really think you're going to believe a recording made by a teenager over your own wife?""
Dad stared at her.
"There's another recording.""
Her laughter disappeared.
I reached for my phone.
The security application had saved several clips from the hallway camera that morning. I'd originally installed it because Vanessa repeatedly entered my bedroom when I wasn't home.
I opened the oldest recording.
The timestamp read 9:17 A.M.
Vanessa was standing outside Dad's home office, holding a thick brown envelope.
She knocked twice.
Then she walked inside without waiting.
A minute later, she came out carrying the envelope.
But what happened next made my stomach turn.
She stopped beneath the staircase camera, opened the envelope, and removed a document.
Then she took out her phone and called someone.
"Yes," she whispered.
"I have the original now.""
She listened.
Then she said something that made Dad grab my phone.
"Don't worry. The boy has no idea his mother's trust was worth eleven million dollars.""
Dad froze.
Eleven million.
I felt the room tilt.
My mother had left me eleven million dollars?
Vanessa continued speaking.
"Once Marcus signs the final transfer, everything belongs to us.""
Dad looked at her.
"Us?""
She backed away.
"Marcus, I can explain.""
But the recording wasn't finished.
A car pulled into our driveway.
A man stepped out.
He wore a dark suit and carried a leather briefcase.
When he walked toward the front door, Dad recognized him immediately.
It was Robert Hayes.
My mother's attorney.
And he wasn't alone.
He was carrying a document with my name written across the top.
Dad whispered, "What the hell is he doing here?""
Vanessa looked toward the door.
May you like
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
"Because today was supposed to be the day we made your son disappear from that inheritance permanently.""
