Chapter 3: The Signature That Destroyed Everything

Dad dropped the document onto the table.

"Robert, look me in the eyes and tell me you knew nothing about this.""

Robert didn't answer.

Dad leaned forward.

"Look at me!""

The attorney finally raised his head.

"I was instructed to prepare the paperwork.""

"By whom?""

Robert glanced at Vanessa.

She shook her head rapidly.

"Don't you dare.""

Dad's voice became quieter.

"By whom?""

Robert took a long breath.

"Your brother.""

The room went silent.

Dad stepped backward as if someone had struck him.

"Daniel?""

"Yes.""

"Daniel arranged the transfer of my wife's estate?""

Robert nodded.

"He contacted me shortly after the funeral. He said your family needed assistance managing the trust while you were dealing with your grief.""

Dad stared at him.

"My brother helped carry my wife's coffin.""

"I understand.""

"He sat at my dinner table. He held my son's shoulder and promised to look after him.""

Robert looked down.

"I understand, Marcus.""

"No, you don't.""

Dad swept the papers off the table.

"That man stole from my dead wife and my living son!""

Vanessa grabbed Robert's arm.

"Tell him about the agreement.""

Robert pulled away.

"Vanessa, I strongly advise you to stop.""

She ignored him.

"Tell him that Marcus agreed to the arrangement!""

Dad turned toward her.

"What arrangement?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Your brother said you knew about the money. He said you wanted Ethan's inheritance moved into a business account until everything settled down.""

"I never agreed to that!""

"How was I supposed to know?""

"You were supposed to ask me!""

She shook her head.

"You were barely functioning after your wife died. I was trying to help.""

I stepped forward.

"You were trying to take everything.""

Vanessa turned on me.

"Shut up! You have no idea what happened in this family!""

"Then tell me.""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my mother's old silver locket.

I'd kept it around my neck since the funeral.

"Mom gave me this three days before she died," I said.

"She told me never to let anyone convince me that she hadn't planned for my future.""

Dad looked at me.

"She told you that?""

I nodded.

"She said the money wasn't important. She said what mattered was that I would always have a choice.""

My voice cracked.

"Why did you let them take that choice away?""

Dad looked devastated.

"I didn't know.""

"You never asked.""

He lowered his head.

I continued.

"Every time I mentioned Mom's inheritance, Vanessa told you I was becoming greedy. Every time I asked about her attorney, you told me to stop upsetting the family. You believed her every single time.""

Dad didn't defend himself.

He couldn't.

Robert quietly began packing his briefcase.

Dad noticed.

"Where do you think you're going?""

"I've provided the information you requested.""

"You've provided evidence of a crime.""

Robert froze.

Dad took out his phone.

"I'm calling the police.""

Vanessa suddenly rushed toward the documents.

She grabbed the transfer authorization and tried tearing it in half.

I caught her wrist.

"Don't.""

She slapped my hand away.

"Get your filthy hands off me!""

Dad stepped between us.

"Vanessa, sit down.""

"I'm leaving.""

"No, you're not.""

She grabbed her purse and headed toward the front door.

Dad followed.

"You aren't taking anything from this house.""

She turned around, her face twisted with anger.

"Your house? Half of this house belongs to me!""

Dad stared at her.

"Not anymore.""

For a moment, I thought she might hit him.

Instead, she smiled.

It was the same smile she'd worn before ripping her dress and accusing me of attacking her.

"You really think you're going to win this?""

Dad said nothing.

She pointed at me.

"Ask your precious son what his mother was doing the night before she died.""

I went still.

"What?""

Vanessa tilted her head.

"Did she ever tell you why she called Daniel to the hospital that night?""

Dad turned sharply.

"What are you talking about?""

Vanessa laughed.

"Your wife wasn't as innocent as you think.""

I stepped closer.

"Don't talk about my mother.""

"She knew something. Something about your father and his brother. That's why she changed the inheritance.""

Dad grabbed her arm.

"Explain yourself.""

She pulled away.

"Ask Daniel. He was there.""

Then she opened the front door.

Before she could step outside, the doorbell rang.

Dad looked through the glass.

His face went white.

Standing on the porch was Daniel.

My uncle.

He was holding a bouquet of white roses.

The same kind he'd brought to my mother's funeral.

Daniel smiled when he saw Dad.

"Marcus! I thought I'd stop by. We need to talk.""

Dad opened the door slowly.

"Come inside.""

Daniel stepped in, then noticed Robert standing beside the dining table.

His smile disappeared.

"What happened?""

Dad held up the forged power of attorney.

"Did you sign this?""

Daniel glanced at the paper.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

She gave him a tiny shake of her head.

I saw it.

Dad saw it, too.

"Answer me, Daniel.""

My uncle sighed.

"Marcus, this isn't the place.""

"You stole my wife's money.""

"Don't be ridiculous.""

"You forged my signature.""

Daniel placed the flowers on the hallway table.

"You're making accusations you don't understand.""

Dad stepped closer.

"Then help me understand.""

Daniel looked at me.

For the first time in my life, I saw something in his expression that I'd never noticed before.

Fear.

Not fear of my father.

Fear of me.

He looked at the silver locket around my neck.

Then he whispered:

"Where did you get that?""

I touched it instinctively.

"From my mother.""

Daniel's face drained of color.

"Did she leave anything inside?""

I frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

He reached toward the locket.

Dad grabbed his wrist.

"Don't touch my son.""

Daniel pulled away.

Then he looked directly at me.

"Ethan, listen carefully. Your mother didn't die without leaving evidence. She recorded everything.""

My heart began pounding.

"Recorded what?""

Daniel glanced toward Vanessa.

She had stopped moving.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

"She knew who was stealing the inheritance. But she also knew who had arranged her final hospital treatment.""

Dad went completely still.

"Daniel...""

My uncle looked at him.

"Marcus, before you call the police, you need to understand something. Your wife didn't trust either of us.""

He pointed at the locket around my neck.

"There's a key inside that opens a safety deposit box. And what's inside that box will tell you why your wife was terrified of her own family.""

I stared at the locket.

Then I noticed something I had never seen before.

A tiny seam along its edge.

It wasn't a solid pendant.

It opened.

May you like

And just as I reached for it, Vanessa screamed:

"ETHAN, DON'T YOU DARE OPEN THAT!""
